Genetic Variability of Some Selected Genotypes of Kenaf (hibiscus Cannabinus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sixteen selected genotypes of Kenaf containing different agronomic traits were evaluated to study their variability, correlation and agronomic performance. Ten different morphological characters and other relevant characters were studied. The estimates of variance showed wide range of variations among their phenotypic and genotypic characters. The highest plant height was obtained from the Ace. No. 4651 (3.92m) which also gave the highest base diameter (26mm) and the highest fibre yield (45gm/plant). It has marker character pink coppery red with lobed leaf. It showed moderately resistant to spiral borer, stem rot, disease and chlorosis resistant characters. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation heritability, genetic advances were observed. Fibre weight has got positive significant correlation with plant height, base diameter, green weight and stick weight.

Objectives:

To estimate the variability, correlation and performance in their genotypic and phenotypic characters made and identifies the superior genotypes to utilize in future breeding program for the improvement of kenaf variety

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Chandina Regional Station, Comilla during the year 2006 in Brahmaputra alluvial soil tract of Gomoti flood plain. Soil was sandy loam with brown colour. It is situated in the tropical climatic zone, characterized by heavy rainfall during the month from May to October and scanty rainfall during rest of the year. The land was medium high with uniform topography and almost homogenous soil fertility, soil PH around 6.7 and organic matter was 7%. Sixteen selected genotypes of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) including two controls varieties were collected from the gene tank of BJRI and were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Each genotype had three rows of 3m length in each block. Space between rows was 30cm. Block to block distance was 1 meter. Usual agronomic practices were done carefully. The recommended doses of fertilizers such as 100kg/ha Urea, 25kgl/ha TSP and 45 Kg/ha MP were used. Relevant data of different characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants of each genotype from each replication. Plants were harvested at maturity. All the collected data were statistically analyzed according to Zaman et at (1982).
