Growth Modeling of Acacia Auriculiformis, Dipterocarpus Turbinatus and Aphanamixis Polystachya in Chittagong University Campus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Acacia auriculiformis is a fast growing species widely planted in the plantations of Chittagong University campus while Dipterocarpus turbinatus and Aphanamixis polystachya are moderately slow growing and slow growing species respectively planted on the comparatively smaller areas of the same location. The present study aimed at the. development of growth models for these three species using regression equation method. For this purpose, data were collected from seven sample plots for each of the species from the Chittagong University campus. Growth models were developed based on different site factors like slope, soil pH and soil organic matter with volume increment of the plantations for each of the species. The multiple regression analysis shows that the growth performance of Dipterocarpus turbinatus is significantly negatively related to slopes and soil pH whereas Acacia auriculiformis is significantly positively related to slopes and negatively related to soil organic matter and Aphanamixis polystachya has got significant positive relationship with soil organic matter and negative relationship with slope. Moreover, relative growth performances of the three species against each of the site factors were also presented. The results suggest that the models were statistically acceptable. The developed models might be used for the prediction of volume increment of such species at particular site and can predict the effect of the factors on their growth performance. The result of this study can be used to plant more site specific species in Chittagong University campus.

Objectives:

To the developed of growth models for Acacia auriculiformis, Dipterocarpus turbinatus and Aphanamixis three species using regression equation method.

Methodology:

The study has been conducted at Chittagong University Campus. Three representative tree species were selected from the whole study area. The species are namely Garjan (Dipterocarpus turbinatus Gaertn), Pitraj (Aphanamixis polystachya (wall). Parker) and Akasmoni (Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Benth). Among them Garjan and Pitraj are indigenous species and Akasmomi is exotic. For each species one representative site planted at different year (Garjan 1979, Akasmoni-1985, Pitraj-1989) was selected randomly from the study area and from each site, seven sample plots of 100 m² (10m x 10m) were undertaken to collect data on growth of these species and their corresponding site factors. To assess the volume increment (m³/ha/yr) of each species the growing stock (m³/ha) of each plot were calculated and to predict the growing stock, tree height and dbh (diameter at breast height) of each stem of each sample plot was measured by Spiegel Relascope and Diameter Tape respectively. Soil samples were collected from each sample plot by an augar up to 30cm depth. Samples of such depth of plantation were mixed to form a composite sample for determining the soil pH and soil Organic Matte. Soil pH at 1:2 soil water ratios was determined with a digital pH Meter in the IFESCU laboratory. Soil Organic Matter of each of the plot was dried in oven at 105⁰c for 8 hours.Then five gram of oven-dried soil of each sample plot was taken in crucible and ignited it in the Muffle furnace at 850⁰c for one and half an hour and cooled at dessicator.
