An investigation was done at BRRI Gazipur T. Aman 2013 and Boro 2014 to determine N response behavior of promising lines compared to BRRI rice varieties. The tested promising lines and varieties in T. Aman were BR8417-2-1-2, BR7528-2R-19-HR10, BRRI dhan39 (Ck) and BRRI dhan49 (Ck). The fertilizer dose for Aman was 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha. In Boro season, promising lines BR7830-16-1-5-3, weed tolerant rice, BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 and BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 were tested with BRRI dhan28 (Ck) under four N doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg N/ha). At 120 kg N/ha, BR7528-2R-19-HR10 gave significantly higher grain yield than BRRI dhan49. In Boro, BR7830-16-1-5-3 gave significantly higher grain yield at 180 kg N/ha compared to 120 kg N/ha. One hundred twenty kg N/ha was sufficient to produce maximum grain yield for weed tolerant rice, BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 and BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5. 15-16 kg N in T. Aman and 14-17 kg N in Boro seasons required to produce one ton rice grains. In T. Aman season, BR7528-2R-19-HR10 showed higher nitrogen RE (36%) than others. In Boro season, 47% of nitrogen RE was found in weed tolerant rice compared to other tested varieties.

To determine N response behavior of promising lines compared with BRRI modern rice varieties.

An investigation was undertaken to determine N response behavior of promising lines compared to BRRI rice varieties. The experiment was conducted in T. Aman and Boro season, 2013-14 at BRRI farm, Gazipur (AEZ28, land type-MHL). In T. Aman season, four N doses were tested against four MV rice. The N doses were 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha. Nitrogen was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 20 DAT and rest 33% at 7 days before PI stage. The tested promising lines and varieties were BR8417-2-1-2, BR7528-2R-19-HR10, BRRI dhan39 (Ck) and BRRI dhan49 (Ck). In Boro season, promising lines BR7830-16-1-5-3, weed tolerant rice, BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 and BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 were tested with BRRI dhan28 (Ck) under four N doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg N/ha). Nitrogen was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. The treatments were assigned in a split-plot with N doses in the main plots and varieties in the sub-plots. Phosphorus, K, S and Zn were applied @ 12-42-10-2 kg/ha and 20-60-10-2.2 kg/ha in T. Aman and Boro seasons, respectively as STB at final land preparation.

Grain yields of rice were significantly influenced by N levels and genotypes. BR8417-2-1-2 and BRRI dhan39 (Ck) produced about 3.0 t/ha grain, while BR7528-2R-19-HR10 and BRRI dhan49 (Ck) produced about 4.0 t/ha without N fertilizer. BR7528-2R-19-HR10 produced comparatively higher grain yield than BRRI dhan39 at all N levels but it produced higher grain yield than BRRI dhan49 at N80 and N120 levels. However, yield difference between BR7528-2R-19-HR10 and BRRI dhan49 was significant at N120 level. BR8417-2-1-2 produced comparatively lower grain yield at all N levels than other genotypes. Each level of N application significantly increased grain yield of BR7528-2R-19-HR10 and BRRI dhan49. Application of N @ 120 kg/ha significantly increased grain yield of all tested rice genotypes in T. Aman season. In Boro season, BR7830-16-1-5-3 produced significantly higher grain yield than other tested genotypes under native N condition. Application of 60 to 120kg N/ha significantly improved grain yield of all tested genotypes. All genotypes produced the highest grain yield at 180 kg N/ha. However, application of 180 kg N/ha significantly increased rice yield compared to 120 kg N/ha only in BR7830-16-1-5-3. So, 120 kg N/ha was sufficient for weed tolerant rice, BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 and BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 to produce maximum yield. At this N level, weed tolerant rice gave significantly higher grain yield than other genotypes. BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 did not show any yield advantage over check variety irrespective of N application. BR7528-2R-19-HR10 uptake significantly higher amount of N compared to others at N120. At Boro season, the highest amount of N absorbed by rice plants at N180 varied from 76 to 93 kg N/ha. BR7830-16-1-5-3 absorbed more N compared to others. The highest RE was in BRRI dhan49 (49%) followed by BR7528-2R-19-HR10 (48%) while in Boro, the highest RE (54%) was recorded with BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5.
