Long term study (since 1971) was performed at BRRI farm Gazipur in a permanent layout to evaluate the consequences of intensive cropping under continuous wet land conditions on soil fertility over time. Experiment accommodated six treatments viz. control (native nutrient), reverse control (NPKSZnCu), NPK, NPKS, NPKSZn and NPKSZnCu. The varieties tested in T. Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons were BRRI dhan48, BRRIdhan46 and BRRI dhan50, respectively. In 2013, annual production in control plot was 4.45 t/ha. Grain yield with NPKS fertilizers over last 33 years showed a little bit increasing trend compared to 1981. Grain yield in control plot was 1.29-1.67 t/ha irrespective of season during 2012-13. However, in reversed management (addition of NPKSZnCu fertilizer) resulted in 10.55 t/ha/yr grain, which is similar to complete fertilizer treatment (10.58 t/ha/yr). Application of Zn slightly increased annual production compared to NPKS treatment. In Boro 2013-14, yield of control plot was 0.52 t/ha. In its reversed management grain yield was 4.58 t/ha that is comparable to complete fertilizer (4.48 t/ha). The highest grain yield of 4.84 t/ha in NPKSZn treatment indicated that the soil has capability to produce optimum yield when it receives balanced fertilizer. Additional use of Cu is not necessary.

To evaluate the consequences of intensive cropping under continuous wet land conditions on soil fertility over time

This experiment was initiated in 1971 in a permanent layout with an objective to grow three rice crops (Boro, T. Aus and T. Aman) annually with NPK fertilizer application. In 1982, the field was divided into two sub-plots, one part receiving NPK dose and the other no fertilizer. In 1984, NPK treatment was modified with the inclusion of S as gypsum because of its deficiency was confirmed through soil-plant analysis. In 1991, the plot was again divided into five sub-plots to accommodate two N levels with and without S fertilizer comprising 4 treatments with an absolute control. Since Boro 2000, the experiment was modified to accommodate six treatments viz. control (native nutrient), reverse control (NPKSZnCu), NPK, NPKS, NPKSZn and NPKSZnCu. The varieties tested in T. Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons are BRRI dhan48, BRRIdhan46 and BRRI dhan50, respectively. The NPK doses used were 140-25-80, 60-15-80 and 60-10-60 kg/ha for Boro, T. Aman and T. Aus respectively. Sulfur, Zn and Cu were applied at 10, 4 and 1 kg/ha in Boro season only. This is a non-replicated trial.

Annual rice production decreased from 6.41 t/ha in 1981 to less than 2.0 t/ha in 2008 because of continuous rice cultivation without fertilizer application. However, grain yield in this treatment is showing an increasing trend since last five years. In 2013, annual production in control plot was 4.45 t/ha. Grain yield with NPKS fertilizers over last 33 years showed a little bit increasing trend compared to 1981. Grain yield in control plot was 1.29-1.67 t/ha irrespective of season during 2012-13. However, its reversed management (addition of NPKSZnCu fertilizer) resulted in 10.55 t/ha/yr grain production, which is similar to complete fertilizer treatment (10.58 t/ha/yr). It indicates that complete fertilization can recuperate soil productivity even after a long period of rice cultivation. Application of Zn slightly increased annual production compared to NPKS treatment. Grain and straw yields in control plot were 0.52 t/ha and 1.94 t/ha, respectively in Boro 2013-14. In its reversed management (addition of NPKSZnCu fertilizer), grain yield was 4.58 t/ha that is comparable to complete fertilizer treatment (4.48 t/ha). The highest grain yield of 4.84 t/ha in NPKSZn treatment indicated that the soil has capability to produce optimum yield when it receives balanced fertilizer. Moreover, additional use of Cu is not necessary.
