Validation of BRRI Developed Fertilizer Management Technology at Farmers’ Fields in Submergence and Cold Prone Area (2013-14)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A number of six 6 observations trials were conducted at the farmers’ fields of Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur and Nilfamari districts (AEZ 3) in T. Aman 2013 and Boro 2013-14 season each to increase land productivity by introducing MV along with improved fertilizer management technology for rice-based cropping systems. Treatments were tested without replication viz, T₁: BRRI recommended dose (AEZ basis), T₂: rice straw at 4.5 t/ha + IPNS basis chemical fertilizer, and T₃: Farmers' Practice (FP). In T. Aman 2013, BRRI dose and T₂gave higher grain yield over FP. The highest grain yield of 4.47 t/ha was obtained with BRRI dose, which was 15.80% higher than FP, while T₂produced 4.15 t/ha grain yield (7.51 % higher than FP). In Boro 2013-14, BRRI dose and T₂produced higher grain yield over FP. The highest grain yield of 7.89 t/ha was obtained with T₂, which was 17.76% higher than FP; while T₁(BRRI dose) produced 7.71 t/ha grain yield (15.07 % higher than FP). These indicate that rice straw applied with IPNS based chemical fertilizer performed better for providing maximum yield in Rangpur region (Submergence and cold prone area) and it might have improved soil health.

Objectives:

To increase land productivity by introducing MV along with improved fertilizer management technology for rice-based cropping systems under Submergence and cold prone area (Rangpur region)

Methodology:

Six field demonstrations in both T. Aman and Boro season were conducted at farmers’ fields in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur and Nilfamari districts (AEZ 3). Soils of experimental fields were sandy loam in texture with slightly acidic reaction. Major crop cycle of that area was Potato/Wheat-Broush-T. Aman. Treatments were imposed without replication viz T₁: BRRI recommended dose (AEZ basis), T₂: rice straw at 4.5 t/ha was used as K source + IPNS basis chemical fertilizer, and T₃: Farmers' Practice (FP). Unit plot size was 8- × 6-m. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn were applied as Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, respectively. In T₂, rice straw at 4.5 t/ha was used as K source. All TSP, MoP, gypsum, Zinc sulphate and rice straw were applied at final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits: at final land preparation, at maximum tillering stage and before PI stage. BRRI dhan 49 was used as test variety in T. Aman season. In Boro, BRRI dhan29 was used as test variety in all sites except Nilfamari, where BRRI dhan28 was used. Two-three seedlings/hill were transplanted at 20 × 20 cm spacing. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Grain yield was recorded from 5 m² areas (centre part of each plot) and 16 hills were collected for recording straw yield. Grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.
