Field experiment was conducted in Boro 2013-14 at BRRI,  Gazipur to compare urea-N application by PU and USG applicator for rice yield and N uptake and to estimate N use-efficiency of PU and USG applicators. Treatments used were: T1 = control, T2 = broadcasting PU @ 135 kg N/ha, T3 = broadcasting PU @ 78 kg N/ha, T4 = PU application by applicator @ 78 kg N/ha, T5 = USG application by applicator @ 78 kg N/ha and T6 = broadcasting @ 95 kg N/ha. The highest tiller/m2 was observed where PU was applied @ 135 kg N/ha as broadcasting followed by PU @ 78 kg N/ha by broadcasting and the lowest in N control treatment. There was no significant effect of PU and USG applicator on N uptake and tiller production. Nitrogen concentration and uptake was statistically similar in plant tissue at PI stage irrespective of N forms and application methods. All of the N treatments gave statistically similar grain yield. Deep placement of N as PU or USG by applicator had the highest AUE (29.46 and 27.68 kg/kg, respectively). Application of N @ 78 kg/ha as USG by USG applicator showed the highest RE of applied N (50.40%).

To compare urea-N application by PU and USG applicator for rice yield and N uptake and to estimate N use-efficiency of PU and USG applicators

A field experiment was conducted in Boro 2013-14 at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Soil of the experimental field was clay loam in texture having pH 6.5. Other nutrients status were: 1.18% organic carbon, 0.16% total N, 0.17 cmol/kg exchangeable K, 19 mg/kg available S and 4 mg/kg available Zn (DTPA extraction). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 3.2- x 12.8-m. Treatments used were: T1 = control (no N fertilizer), T2 = broadcasting PU @ 135 kg N/ha (recommended dose), T3 = broadcasting PU @ 78 kg N/ha, T4 = PU application by applicator @ 78 kg N/ha, T5 = USG application by applicator @ 78 kg N/ha (2.7 g/4 hills, recommended dose) and T6 = broadcasting @ 95 kg N/ha (70% of recommended PU dose). All of the treatments received a blanket dose of P-K-S-Zn fertilizers @ 20-60-20-4 kg/ha respectively. Fertilizers except urea were applied at final land preparation. In T2, T3 and T6, urea was applied in three equal splits at basal, at active tillering stage and at 7 days before PI stage. In treatment T4 and T5, full dose of PU and USG were applied at three days after transplanting (DAT) by applicators. About 45 day old seedlings of BRRI dhan29 was transplanted on last week of January. Irrigation, weeding and other cultural management practices were done equally as per needed. At panicle PI stage, four hills from each plot were collected for counting tiller number, dry weight and N uptake.  At maturity the crop was harvested manually on 2nd week of May from 5 m2 area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis. Tiller and panicle numbers per square meter were also recorded. Nitrogen concentration and its uptake by grain and straw were determined following standard procedures. Nitrogen use-efficiency was calculated as follows:

Agronomic efficiency (AE) = (Gf – Gu)/Na = kg/kg

Where, Gf is the grain yield of fertilized plot (kg), Gu is the grain yield of unfertilized plot (kg), and Na is the quantity of N applied (kg).

Recovery efficiency (RE) = (NU NA – NU NO)/N RN

Where, NUNA = Nutrient uptake (kg/ha) due to nutrient addition

NUNO = Nutrient uptake (kg/ha) due to nutrient omission

NRN = Rate of nutrient addition (kg/ha)

Tiller number, dry weight and grain yield at PI stage were influenced with N added from different forms and methods. The highest tiller/m2 was observed where PU was applied @ 135 kg N/ha as broadcasting followed by PU @ 78 kg N/ha by broadcasting and the lowest in N control treatment. There was no significant effect of PU and USG applicator on tiller production. Nitrogen concentration was statistically similar in plant tissue at PI stage irrespective of N forms and application methods. A similar trend was observed for N uptake in all treatments at PI. Grain yield 5.56 t/ha was observed wherein N was used @135 kg/ha as PU broadcasting followed by PU applicator at 78 kg N/ha (5.35 t/ha). All of the N treatments gave statistically similar grain yield. Deep placement of PU and USG had no significant difference on N uptake. The AUE with recommended PU dose (135 kg N/ha) was 18.56 kg/kg and in 70% of PU recommended dose (95 kg N/ha) it was 24.24 kg/kg. Deep placement of N as PU or USG by applicator had the highest AUE (29.46 and 27.68 kg/kg, respectively). Application of N @ 78 kg/ha as USG by USG applicator showed the highest RE of applied N (50.40%).
