Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 2005-2014. The objective of this study was to develop and release of micronutrient enriched modern rice variety for Boro season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR7840-54-1-2-5 as micronutrient enriched BRRI dhan64 in 2014 for Boro season. Plant height of the variety is 110 cm and lodging tolerance. The flag leaf is erect and dark green color. Large sized panicle with very weak pubescence on the lemma and palea and light brown decorticated grain. In farmers’ field condition, the variety yielded 4.6 to 7.0 t/ha with an average of 6.5 t/ha with growth duration of 150 days. It produced 0.3 t/ha higher yield (mean) with 5-6 days delayed maturity than BRRI dhan28. The grain type (shape and size) is medium bold with high (26.0%) amylose content. Enriched with high zinc (24 mg/kg) content in polished rice. This new rice could be used as an alternative along with existing other approaches to combat Zinc deficiency among children and women of poor community who largely depend on rice for majority of their vitamins and mineral requirements.

Objectives:

To develop micronutrient enriched modern rice variety with earliness and high yield potential suitable for Boro season.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 2005-2014. The variety was developed through hybridization followed by pedigree selection method. It is BRRI developed line with pedigree BR7840-54-1-2-5 (IR75382-32-2-3-3/BR7166-4-5-3-2-5-5B1-92). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted at 10 locations viz. Gazipur, Jessore; Rangpur, Comilla, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Habiganj, Faridpur and Barisal to evaluate of promising breeding line for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety. The proposed variety trials (PVT) were carried out at eight locations i. e. Gazipur; Bhanga; Mymensingh; Rangpur; Rajshahi; Terokhada; Sonagazi and Habigonj using BRRI dhan28 as standard check during Boro 2012-2013. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan28. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR7840-54-1-2-5 as variety.
