This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Aus (upland) season. The objective of this study was to develop and release of short duration, drought tolerant direct seeded rice variety for upland condition. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line OM1490 as BRRI dhan65 for direct seeded Aus (upland) rice variety in 2014. Plant height of the variety is 88 cm which is shorter than BRRI dhan43 and lodging tolerant. The flag leaf is erect. In farmers’ field condition, the variety yielded 1.7 to 5.5 t/ha with an average of 3.5 t/ha with growth duration of 100 days in direct seeded condition. The variety produced 0.5 t/ha higher yield (mean) with similar growth duration of BRRI dhan43. It has long slender type grain with high (26.8%) amylose content and non-shattering characteristics. It is moderate drought tolerant suitable for drought prone direct seeded rice (Broadcasting Aus) areas.

To develop short duration direct seeded Aus (upland) variety with quick seedling emergence and vigorous growth; tolerance to lodging, drought and pre-harvest sprouting (viviparous).

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Aus (upland) season. This variety was developed through hybridization followed by pedigree selection method. The variety was collected from IRRI, Philippines through INGER (International Network for Germplasm Evaluation of Rice). The genotype was developed in Vietnam with pedigree OM1490 (OM606/IR44592-62-1-1-3). After collection of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (SYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was carried out at three locations viz. BRRI farm, Kapasia, Gazipur and Kushtia to evaluate of promising breeding line for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety. The Proposed Variety Trials (PVT) were carried out at eight location i. e. BRRI farm, Kapasia, Gazipur; Faridpur Sadar; Gopalganj Sadar; Sonagazi, Feni; Sitakundu, Chittagong; Biswanath and Golapganj Sylhet using BRRI dhan43 as standard check. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan43. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line OM1490 as variety.

The variety BRRI dhan65 is recommended for cultivation in drought prone direct seeded rice (Broadcasting Aus) areas of Bangladesh.
