This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur and BRRI Regional station Satkhira in Boro season during 2000-2014. The objective of this study was to develop and release of salt tolerant Boro rice variety for coastal saline zone of Bangladesh. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR7100-R-6-6 as saline tolerant Boro variety, BRRI dhan67 for saline prone areas in 2014. Plant height of the variety is 100 cm with 145 days growth duration. It can produce 3.8-7.5 t/ha grain yield depending on the different levels of salinity which is around 0.5 t/ha higher than BRRI dhan47. The variety produced higher yield (mean) with similar growth duration of BRRI dhan28 and two weeks earlier than that of BRRI dhan29 with salt tolerance The survival rate under salt stress (EC 12 dS/m) at seedling stage was higher (81%) compared with sensitive check BRRI dhan28 (42%). The variety is tolerant to salt stress of EC 12-14 dS/m at seedling stage and complete life cycle at 8.0 dS/m. It has medium slender type grain with intermediate (24%) amylose content and non-shattering characteristics.

To develop salt tolerant Boro rice variety for coastal saline zone.

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur and BRRI Regional station Satkhira in Boro season during 2000-2014. This variety was developed through hybridization followed by pedigree selection method. Rapid Generation Advanced (RGA) method also used to develop this line. It is BRRI developed line with pedigree BR7100-R-6-6 (IR61247-3D-8-2-1/BRRI dhan36). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments were conducted in coastal saline zone of Bangladesh. This genotype was also selected through an alternative approach participatory varietal selection (PVS) under a mother-and-baby trial with active participation of farmers. Salt stress screening of the genotype was done under controlled conditions at seedling stage under salt stress of 12-14 dS/m. The line was screened also for whole life tolerance to salt stress at 4.0-12.0 dS/m. Salinity was applied at transplanting and continued throughout the crop growth period.  The Proposed Variety Trials (PVT) were carried out at ten salt affected areas i. e. Dakope, Paikgacha, Batiaghata, Khulna; Asasuni, Debhata, Tala, BRRI farm, Satkhira; Sonagazi, Feni; Patharghata, Barguna and Nazirpur, Pirojpur using BRRI dhan47 as standard check. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan47. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR7100-R-6-6 as variety.

The variety BRRI dhan67 is recommended for cultivation in saline prone coastal zone of Bangladesh.
