This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 2004-2014. The objective of this study was to develop and release of modern rice variety with earliness and high yield potential suitable for Boro season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR7830-16-1-5-3 as BRRI dhan68 in 2014 for Boro season. The flag leaf is erect with dark green color. Plant height of the variety is 95 cm with lodging tolerance. In farmers’ field condition, the variety yielded 5.0 to 9.2 t/ha with an average of 7.3 t/ha with growth duration of 150 days in Boro season. The variety showed 13% yield advantage over the check variety BRRI dhan28 with 5-6 days delayed maturity. Large sized panicle with very weak pubescence on the lemma and palea and light brown decorticated grain. The grain type (shape and size) is long bold with high (25.7%) amylose content. Disease and insect infestation is also relatively low in this variety.

To develop modern rice variety with earliness and high yield potential suitable for Boro season.

This study was carried out at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 2004-2014. The variety was developed through hybridization followed by pedigree selection method. Backcrossing (two times with BRRI dhan29) is also used to develop the line. It is BRRI developed line with pedigree BRBR7830-16-1-5-3 (BRRI dhan29*2/IR68144). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted at 10 locations viz.  Gazipur; Jessore; Rangpur;  Comilla; Dinajpur; Rajshahi; Bogra; Habiganj; Faridpur and Barisal to evaluate of promising breeding line for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety. Finally the proposed variety trials (PVT) were carried out at nine locations i. e. Gazipur; Mymensingh; Faridpur; Barisal; Sonagazi, Feni; Habigonj; Satkhira; Rangpur and Rajshahi using BRRI dhan28 as standard check during Boro 2013-2014. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan28. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BRBR7830-16-1-5-3 as variety.
