This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season. The aim of this study was to develop and release of modern rice variety with earliness and high yield potential suitable for Boro season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line Weed tolerant Rice as BRRI dhan69 in 2014 for Boro season. Plant height of the variety is 100-105 cm and lodging tolerance. The flag leaf is long and wider with deep green leaf color. In farmers’ field condition, the variety yielded 4.9 to 9.1 t/ha with an average of 7.3 t/ha with growth duration of 153 days in Boro season. It produced 1.0 t/ha higher yield (mean) than BRRI dhan28 with intermediate duration between BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29. The grain type (shape and size) is medium bold and the grain color is golden. Disease and insect infestation is also relatively low in this variety. It can produce higher yield with less 20% fertilizer of recommended doses than other high yielding varieties.

To develop modern rice variety with earliness and high yield potential suitable for Boro season

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season. The variety was introduced from IRRI, Philippines. It was developed through hybridization followed by pedigree selection method. It is IRRI developed line with pedigree Weed tolerant Rice (WuShanYouZhan/PI312777). After collection of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted at 10 locations viz.  Gazipur; Jessore; Rangpur; Comolla; Dinajpur; Rajshahi; Bogra; Habiganj; Faridpur and Kushtia using BRRI dhan28 as standard check to evaluate of promising breeding line for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety. Finally the proposed variety trials (PVT) were carried out at nine locations i. e. Gazipur; Mymensingh; Faridpur; Barisal; Sonagazi, Feni; Habigonj; Satkhira; Rangpur; and Rajshahi using BRRI dhan28 as standard check during Boro 2013-2014. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan28. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line Weed tolerant Rice as variety.

The variety BRRI dhan69 is recommended for cultivation in Boro season of Bangladesh. The variety can produce higher yield with less 20% fertilizer of recommended doses than other high yielding varieties.
