Performance of Fourteen Cauliflower Varieties at Early and Mid Winter in the Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fourteen cauliflower varieties viz. White flash, Snow crown, White shot, White contessa, Balaka, Tokita, Rupa (BARI Phulkopi-1), Agrahayani, Benarashi, Snow queen, Indam early, Snow grace, Late alhead and Early snowball were evaluated at two planting time viz. 15 October and 15 November at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati from September, 2004 to March, 2006. Most of the varieties performed better at 15 October planting. A lot of variations were observed among the varieties in respect to days to harvest, curd size, yield and profitability. White shot and Balaka gave early curd while Early snowball and Late alhead gave delayed curd production. Snow queen, White contessa, White shot, Balaka and Rupa performed better in 15 October planting while White contessa and Snow grace, Rupa and Benarashi performed better in 15 November planting. White contessa gave the maximum curd yield (21.42 t/ha) while the highest BCR (7.95) was found from the variety Snow queen in 15 October planting.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of existing cultivars at hill valley in early and mid winter. To select the most profitable early cauliflower variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ralikhali, Rangamati Hill District in consecutive two cropping season from September 2004 to February 2006. The soil was silt loam with 5.4 pH value and 0.70% organic matter having low water holding capacity. The experiment was conducted following split plot design comprising two planting time in the main plot and 14 varieties viz. White flash, Snow crown, White shot, White contessa, Balaka, Tokita, Rupa (BARI Phulkopi-1), Agrahayani, Benarashi, Snow queen, Indam early, Snow grace, Late alhead and Early snowball in the sub plots and replicated thrice. Seeds of fourteen cauliflower varieties were sown on September 10 and October 10, 2004 and 2005 in permanent seedbed. Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted on 15 October and 15 November each year in the 3.6x3.6m unit plots accommodating 36 plants per plot in six rows at 60x60cm spacing. Cowdung, urea, TSP and MP were applied @ 5 ton, 120 kg-N, 80 kg P₂O₅ and 120 kg K₂O per hectare, respectively. The total quantity of cowdung was applied during the land preparation. The entire amount of TSP and half of each urea and MP were applied as basal doses in the pit while the rest of urea and MP were applied as top dressing in three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Other intercultural operations e. g. weeding, mulching, irrigation were done when required. The crop was free from insect pest infestation, so that no control measures were taken. Data on days to harvest, weight of plant, plant height and diameter of card, weight of curd/plant were recorded at the time of harvest from 10 randomly selected plants from the inner rows of the plots. Curd yield and benefit cost ratio (BCR) was calculated from the weight of curd per plant and considering the market value of the product at the time of harvest. Economic calculation was done on the basis of time to time local market price of curd and all other inputs. Recorded data were analyzed by computer using M-STAT program and mean separation was done by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

All the varieties took longer time for harvesting when planted at 15 October than 15 November.White contessa, Rupa, Snow queen, and Late alhead gave consistent yield in both planting while drastic yield reduction was observed in snow queen and Agrahayani. The maximum BCR was obtained from the variety White contessa (8.03) from 15 October 2005 planting while snow queen gave the highest average (2 years) BCR (7.95) at the 15 October planting. Considering earliness, yield, profit, land use and other factors White shot, Snow queen, White contessa and Balaka are suitable for early cultivation, White contessa and Rupa for mid season cultivation. White contessa was found more profitable for both early and mid season cultivation.
