The main purpose of this study was to determine the impact of mushroom cultivation on socio-economic condition of beneficiaries. The study also aimed at explaining the socio demographic characteristics of the respondents with exploring the relationship between all these characteristics and their income from mushroom cultivation of the respondents. The study was conducted in four villages (vatpara, jamsing, purbo jamsing and joypara) of savar upazilla in Dhaka district. For this purpose seventy five respondents were selected randomly. Data were personally collected by the researcher, compiled and interpreted as per objectives of the study. The findings indicated that most of the respondents of the study area were middle aged (67%) and had secondary to above secondary level of education (76%) with small to medium (78.6%) family. On the other hand most of them had medium extension contact (60.4%), highly cosmopolite (39%), medium utilization of mass media (64%) although they are moderately innovative (67%) minded. The respondents had an average two years mushroom farming experience which developed favorable attitude (73%) towards mushroom cultivation. Co-efficient of correlation analysis indicated that respondent’s annual income, mushroom farming experience and mass media utilization had positive significant relationship with income from mushroom cultivation although age had negative significant relationship. Mushroom cultivation brought positive impact on different aspects of livelihood of the beneficiaries. Annual income, standard of living and household condition of the beneficiaries were increased as compared to the previous year. Considering all these it can be said that mushroom cultivation is beneficial both for social and economic improvement.

  1. To determine socioeconomic characteristics of the mushroom beneficiaries of concerned area.
  2. To show and describe impact of mushroom cultivation on the mushroom beneficiaries.

Mushroom is extremely cultivated in most of the areas of Savar upazilla. Mushroom beneficiaries of Savar Upazila of Dhaka district were the population of the study whose number was 300, among them 25% was selected as sample using simple random sampling technique. Thus the total numbers of respondents became 75. In order to collect relevant information, an interview schedule was carefully designed keeping the objectives of the study in view and the data were collected from the selected respondents though personal face to face interview. The independent variables of this study were respondent’s age, education, family size, extension contact, mass media utilization, innovativeness, cosmopoliteness, and mushroom farming experience. Age of a respondent referred to the period from his birth to the time of data collection. Age of a farmer was measured in terms of actual years on the basis of his/her statement. The dependent variable of this study was impact of mushroom cultivation on socio-economic condition of beneficiaries which includes annual income, standard of living and household condition of mushroom beneficiaries. Annual income of a respondent was determined on the basis of his total earnings from mushroom cultivation, agriculture, service, business and other sources. It is expressed in Bangladeshi taka (BDT). The score assigned against each of the selected item are given below: Mobile: Use mobile = 1, No mobile = 0. Vehicle: Motor Vehicle = 3, Motorcycle = 2, Bicycle = 1, No vehicle = 0. Toilet: Sanitary = 3, Ring with slub = 2, Earthen = 1, None = 0. Medicare: Specialist doctor = 4, MBBS =B, DHMS = 2, Compounder =1, No care = 0. Entertainment: CD + TV + Radio =3, TV + Radio =2 , TV/ Radio = 1, None = 0. The respondents were asked to indicate the change regarding household condition. The items under this head were wall of the house, roof of the house, no. of bulbs in the house, use of electric fans and source of drinking water. The respondents were asked about above mentioned items and scores were given against each of the items according to his response. The score assigned against each of the selected items are given below: Household condition (wall): Pucca = 2, Kacha = 1; Roof of the house: Pucca = 2, Tin = 1, Straw = 0; Number of bulbs: total number; Use of electric fans: Total number; Source of water: Own= 1, Neighbor = 0. Then the mean value was calculated for before and after cultivation. The probability percentage and t-value were also calculated.
