Performance of Flat Poded Dwarf French Bean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The variability and performance of 45 flat poded French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) germplasm were evaluated at the Regional Horticultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong in two consequent cropping seasons of 2002-03 and 2003-04. A lot of variability observed among the germplasm in respect of its growth period, plant height, number of branch, number and weight of pods/plant, pod & seed characteristics pod and seed yield. The size of seeds were smaller to bigger (29.3-65.1g/100seeds), shape- long, ovate, flat, round and colour of seeds were red, white, black, yellow, brown, brick coloured, mosaic etc. Number of pods and weight of seeds per plant ranges 4.2 to 29.0 and 6.7-56.7g, respectively. The germplasm Trebona gave the maximum number of pods/plant (29.0) and seed yield (4.70t/ha) while DRK72 gave the lowest seed yield (0.60 t/ha) among 45 germplasm.

Objectives:

To assess the comparative performance of 45 germplasm collected from various places and organizations for selection of the promising line(s) providing high yielding, good quality pods and seeds.

Methodology:

An evaluation trial with 45 flat poded dwarf French bean (shell bean) lines was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong in two consecutive cropping season (winter) of 2002-03 and 2003-04. A randomized complete block design was followed with three replications. In 2004-05 secondary evaluation was conducted following the same design with eight selected lines and three replications. The seeds of 45 Bushbean germplasm were collected from different places and organizations in Bangladesh, Thailand and Netherlands. The soil of experimental field was sandy loam having pH value 5.5 and deficient in organic matter. Raised beds were prepared to save the crop from high rainfall and water logging. Two adjacent beds were considered as a unit plot. The seeds were sown on third week of November every year directly in the field maintaining 30x10cm spacing in 5x1.2m beds accommodating 200 plants per bed. After well preparation by subsequent ploughing and laddering, the experimental land was manured and fertilized with cowdung, N, P₂O₅ and K₂O @ 10000, 50, 75 and 60 kg/ha, respectively. Nitrogen, P and K were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung, TSP and half of urea and MP were applied at the time of final land preparation and rest of each urea and MP were applied at 30 days after sowing. Two seeds per pit were sown and kept one seedling per pit after thinning at 15 DAS. Intercultural operations such as weeding, mulching and irrigation were done as and when necessary. No control measures were taken because there were no severe insect pest infestations in the crop. Green pods were harvested about 12-15 days after flowering when it was succulent and soft. Harvesting of green edible pods of one bed from each plot were started from mid February and continued up to mid March. The remaining bed of each plot was kept for seed production and harvested after drying the pods at last week of March. Data were recorded from 20 randomly selected plants for individual plant performance and from each bed for per hectare yield. Data on all yield and yield contributing characters were recorded, calculated and statistically analyzed as per standard procedure to assess the result.

Achievement/Findings:

From two years evaluation, eight lines were selected for further performance trial. In 2004-05 secondary evaluation was conducted with selected lines. The line Pl162 produced higher number of pods per plant (18.9) and maximum pod and yield (15.78 t/ha) but maximum seed yield was obtained from the line PL 15 (4.09 t/ha). The line PL162 also gave better seed yield (3.94t/ha). The previous performance of Trebona and Pursan was good. After three years evaluation the line PL162, PL 15, Trebona and Pursan were identified as promising due to their continuous better performance among the evaluated 45 flat poded dwarf French bean lines in the Chittagong environment.
