Influence of Spacing and Planting Time on Bushbean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.) Production in Chittagong Plain

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong in split plot design with six spacing and three planting time of Bushbean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in three consecutive cropping season from October, 1997 to March, 2000. Early (15 October) planting took longer time for flowering and fruiting while late (15 December) planting gave early flowering but number of pod and green pod yield decreased. Wider spacing gave higher number and weight of pods per plant but closer spacing gave higher number of pod and fresh pod yield per hectare. The maximum green pod yield (22.64 t/ha) was obtained from 20x10cm spacing of 15 October planting and it was minimum (9.19 t/ha) in December planting with 30x15cm spacing. Plant height, number of branch, foot & root rot disease infestation was higher in earlier planting and it was lower in late planting.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable spacing and planting time for higher pod yield of Bushbean in the Chittagong region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during the period from October 1997 to March 2000. Split Plot Design was followed giving six spacing arrangement in sub plots and three planting time viz. 15 October, 15 November and 15 December in the main plots. The unit plot size was 6x1.5m accommodating 200, 300, 240, 360, 300 and 450 pits per plot in the spacing arrangement of 30x15, 30x10, 25x15, 25x10, 20x15 and 20x10cm respectively. Raised beds were prepared to save the crop from high rainfall and water logging. The land was manured and fertilized with Cowdung, N, P₂O₅, and K₂O @ 10000, 50, 75 and 60 kg/ha respectively. The entire amount of cowdung, TSP and half of urea and MP were applied at the time of final land preparation and rest was applied at 30 days after planting. A high yielding Bushbean variety “BARI Jharshim-1”, developed by Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur was used in the study. It is a semi-determinate, dwarf, bushy type plant having profuse bearing habit of slightly curved, dark green, succulent and round pods which are suitable to use as fresh bean and dry seeds. Two seeds per pit were sown maintaining the treatment spacing and kept one seedling per pit after thinning at 15 DAS. Weeding, irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. No control measures were taken because there was no severe insect pest infestation in the experimental crop. Green pods were harvested about 12-15 days after flowering when it was succulent, soft and delicious. Data were recorded from 20 randomly selected plants for individual plant performance and from 50% of each plot for per hectare yield. Another 50% of each plot were kept for seed production and data on seed production were taken from that area when the pods and seeds were dried. Data on all characters were collected carefully and statistically analyzed as per standard procedure to assess the result.

Achievement/Findings:

It was revealed from the above discussion that the optimum spacing of dwarf Bushbean is 20x10cm and 20x15cm with early planting gave higher green pod and seed yield of BARI Jharshim-1 in the Chittagong region. The spacing can be varied up to 20-25cm line to line and 10-15cm plant-to-plant spacing depending on the soil fertility and productivity of the cropping area. For better yield, Bushbean cultivation is to be suggested in early winter i. e. mid October to mid November. In the early winter like October, the beds should be raised so that late rainfall and water logging may not hamper the crop growth encouraging foot and root rot diseases.
