A field experiment on sword bean comprising five levels of N (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha), four levels each of P (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha) and K (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha) with a blanket dose of cowdung @ 10 t/ha was conducted at ARS, Raikhali in the district of Rangamati during 2004-2005 to determine the optimum fertilizer requirement. The N50P200K100 gave maximum pod yield (27.04 t/ha) and the lowest pod yield from control treatment (N0P0K0). Economic analysis showed the treatment N75P100K100 kg/ha gave the highest gross margin of Tk. 152919.25 ha-1 closely followed by N50P200K100 kg/ha (Tk. 152017.75 ha-1). The treatment N50P100K50 gave reasonable amount of gross margin of Tk. 140055.5 ha-1 and marginal rate of return as high as 1307%.

To study the growth and yield performances of sword bean under different fertilizer combinations and to determine the optimum fertilizer requirement.

The present investigation was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during April , 2004 to January, 2005. The experimental field belongs to AEZ 29 and the soil is sandy clay loam with pH 5.5. The precropping soil analysis was given below. The bed size was 6 m x 1 m. Twelve combinations of treatments consisting N (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 kg/ha), P (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg/ha) and K (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg/ha) with a blanket dose of well decomposed cowdung @ 10 t/ha were used for this trial. N, P and K were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MP. The entire amount of cowdung, TSP and One third urea and MP each was applied as basal in pits and the rest amount of urea and MP was applied in two equal installments in 30 and 60 days after planting (DAP). Seeds of sword bean were dibbled @ 2 seeds/hill on 16 May 2004 maintaining plant spacing 1 m x 0.75 m. As such, there is no attack of pest and diseases no control measure was taken. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. Data on days to 1st and last harvest, plant height, no of branch/plant, no of pods/plant, weight of pods/plant, pod size (length and breadth), single pod weight, were taken from randomly selected 10 plants. Fresh pod yield /plot was then converted to per hectare yield. The data recorded were analyzed through MSTAT Programme and the treatment means were separated By DMRT for interpretation of the results. Economic analysis was also done

Significantly the highest weight of pods per plant was obtained from T9 (1193 g) closely followed by T4 (1175 g). No significant difference was observed among T3, T4, T5, T8, T9, T11 and T12 treatments with regard to weight of pods per plant. The T9 treatment (N50P200K100 kg/ha) gave maximum pod yield per hectare (27.04 t). The highest gross margin of Tk. 152919.25 was obtained from the treatment T4 (N75P100K100) closely followed by T9 (Tk. 1520175.5). But the highest marginal rate of return (1307%) with gross margin of Tk. 140055.5 was found with the treatment T11 (N50P100K50 kg/ha) which indicated that if the farmers spent an additional Tk. 100, then they could expect a benefit of Tk. 1307. Hence the treatment N50P100K50 kg/ha was found economically profitable for the production of sword bean in the eastern hilly areas
