Effect of N, P, K, Zn and Mo on the Yield and Profitability of Okra in the Chittagong Region.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted for two seasons at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong during March to August 1996 and 1997. The experiment was laid out in a RCB Design with 14 fertilizer combinations of five elements with different rates viz. N (0, 50, 100, 150), P (0, 30, 60, 90), K (0, 50 and 100), Zn (0, 2.0 and 4.0) and Mo (0, 0.5 and 1.0) kg/ha. BARI released high yielding and Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV) resistant Okra variety BARI Dherosh-1 was used in the experiment. All nutrient element increased number of fruits, weight fruits/plant, fresh fruit yield, profitability and benefit cost ratio up to a certain level. Days to flowering, number of branch/plant and fruit size were not affected with different doses of N, P, K, Zn and Mo. The maximum number of fruits (35.20/plant), weight of fruits (787g/plant), fresh fruit yield (26.17t/ha), Gross return (Tk. 1,56,400.00/ha) and net return (Tk. 1,26,700.00/ha) were obtained from the treatment T₇=N100P90K50Zn2Mo0.5 ( kg/ha). Maximum benefit cost ratio (4.313) was obtained from the treatment T₃= N100P90K50Zn2Mo0.5

Objectives:

To select the optimum dose and to find out the effect of N, P, K, Zn and Mo on yield and profitability of Okra cultivation

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for two season at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong during March to August 1996 and 1997. The soil was silty loam with pH 5.5 to 6.0. Before opening the land the soil samples were taken from ten spots of the experimental area and analyzed from the Soil Science Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. BARI released high yielding and Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV) resistant Okra variety BARI Dherosh-1 was used in the experiment. Two seeds were sown in a pit in the first week of March both the years and one healthy plant was kept after rouging. N, P, K, Zn and Mo were applied through Urea, TSP, Muriate of Potash, Zinc Sulphate and Molybdic acid respectively. The entire amount of organic manure (5 t/ha), P, K, Zn, Mo, S (20kg/ha), B (1kg/ha) and one third of urea were applied as basal. The rest of Urea was applied as top dressing in three equal installments after 30, 45 and 60 days after sowing. Intercultural operations viz. weeding, mulching, irrigation etc. were done as and when necessary. There was no severe insect pest infestation so that no control measures were taken. Data on days to flowering, days to first and last harvest, plant height, number of branch per plant, number of fruits per plant, weight of fruits per plant, size of fruit, etc. were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from the inner rows of the plots and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that the optimum dose will be T= N100P90K50Zn2.0Mo0.5 for maximum yield and benefit of Okra cultivation in the Chittagong region.
