Field experiments were conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong in two consecutive years, 1996 and 1997. Fourteen combinations of five nutrient elements with different rates viz. N (0, 50, 100, 150), P (0, 30, 60, 90), K (0, 50 and 100), Zn (0, 2.0 and 4.0) and Mo (0, 0.5 and 1.0) kg/ha were used to know the effects of these elements on the seed production of okra cv BARI Dherosh-1. All nutrient elements increased fruiting, seed production, seed yield and benefit-cost ratio up to a certain level. Days to flowering, number of branch/plant and fruit size were not affected by added of N, P, K, Zn and Mo. The maximum seed weight (78.0 g/plant), seed yield (3.25 t/ha), gross return (Tk. 1.95 lakh/ha), net return (Tk. 1.66 lakh/ha) and benefit cost ratio (5.77) were obtained from the treatment N100P60K50Zn2Mo0.5 (kg/ha). The maximum number of fruits (30.2/plant) was obtained from the treatment N100P90K50Zn2Mo0.5. The calculated optimum dose of okra for seed production from polynomial regression equation of the experimental result was N89P74K50Zn2.8Mo0.7 kg/ha.

To find out the effect of N, P, K, Zn and Mo on seed yield and profitability of okra seed production.

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong in consecutive two years during March to August of 1996 and 1997. The soil was silt loam with 5.9 and 0.70% organic matter. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 14 treatment combinations and three replications. The unit plot size was 5.0x2.4m accommodating 40 plants per plot in four rows with 60x50cm spacing. The BARI released high yielding and yellow vein mosaic virus (YVMV) resistant okra variety BARI Dherosh-1 was used in the experiment. Two seeds were sown in a pit in the first week of March in both years and one healthy plant was kept in each pit finally. Elements N, P, K, Zn and Mo were applied through urea, TSP, MP, zinc sulphate and molybdic acid, respectively, according to the treatment. A general dose of organic manure (5 t/ha), S (20kg/ha) and B (1kg/ha) were used in the experiment. The entire amount of organic manure, P, K, Zn, Mo, S, B and one third of urea were applied as basal. The rest of urea was applied as top dressing in three equal installments after 30, 45 and 60 days of sowing. Intercultural operations viz. weeding, mulching, irrigation etc. were done as and when necessary. The crop was free from insect pest infestation so that no control measures were taken. Data on days to flowering, days to mature fruit harvest, plant height, branching, number of fruits per plant, size of fruit, number of seeds per fruit and weight of seeds/plant were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from the inner rows of the plots. Economic calculation was done on the basis of local market price of inputs (fertilizers, seeds, labour etc.) and output (Tk 60/kg seed). All the data were analyzed statistically. The polynomial regression analysis was done and optimum dose of nutrient elements for maximum seed yield and economic rate of inputs were calculated from simple polynomial regression equations i e. Y =  + 1x + 2x2 (Zaman et al. 1982). Here x is the independent variable (nutrient element) and Y is the dependent variable (seed yield, number of fruit, number of seeds etc.). The optimum dose of nutrient element for maximum yield is X = -1/22 and economic dose were Xe = X – (Px/Py)/22. Here Px is the price of input (nutrient element) and Py is the price of the products.

From the overall result it was observed that all the nutrient elements increased the number of fruits, fresh weight/plant, seed yield, profitability and benefit-cost ratio up to a certain level. N, P, K, Zn and Mo application did not affect days to flowering, number of branches/plant, fruit size, number of seeds/fruit, weight of 1000 seeds and percentage of germination. The maximum number of fruits (30.2/plant) was obtained from the treatment T7: N100P90K50Zn2.0Mo0.5 followed by N100P60K50Zn2.0Mo0.5 (29.7/plant). The maximum weight of seeds (78 g/plant), seed yield (3.25t/ha), gross return (Tk 1.95 lakh/ha), net return (Tk 1.66 lakh/ha) and benefit cost ratio (5.77) were obtained from the treatment T3: N100P60K50Zn2.0Mo0.5 (kg/ha). From the calculation of the polynomial regression equation of the experiment, the optimum dose of okra for that particular soil was N89P74K50Zn2.8Mo0.7 kg/ha.
