Effect of Cycocel on the Growth and Development of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to establish the beneficial effect of cycocel as seed treatment and foliar spray on rice (Oryza sativa L.). In all treatments cycocel solution decreased the germination percentage of rice and also delayed germination. Treated plants remained shorter up to the 4th week. Around the 5th week the treated plants grew faster, and plants treated with 10 and 20% cycocel became taller than those treated with the other concentrations of cycocel, as well as the untreated plants. Continuous spraying of cycocel often delayed flowering and fruiting.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of cycocel on the growth and development of rice variety 'Dharial'.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, in 1968. The seeds were soaked in water for 24 hr and then in 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% cycocel solutions for 6, 12 and 24 hr respectively. The treated seeds were washed and germinated in Petri-dishes. After 7 days the seedlings were transplanted in randomized-block design and 4 replications were adopted. Two supporting experiments were also conducted. In one, additional cycocel treatment of 0, 25 and 50% was given as a foliar spray after every 3 weeks of growth; in the other an additional cycocel treatment of 0, 20 and 40% was given as a foliar spray on 1- and 2-month-old plants. The germination period, germination period figures for 6- and 24-hr (soaking percentage, height of the plants at various periods) were deleted as they follow the stage and the period of development of same trend. As the concentration of the different growth phase were recorded. solution and the time of soaking in- creased, the germination percentage de- creased. The treated seeds showed 60 to 98% germination, whereas the control seeds showed 100% germination. The lowest germination was in the highest concentration of cycocel solution (50%).
