Training on Fertilizer and Irrigation Water in Crop Production -an Ex-post Factor Analysis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The article is based on a training programme conducted in the Greduate Training Institute during April 1 to 19. 1984 on Fertilizer and Irrigation Water in Crop Production for the mid-level officers of DAE. BADC, and BWDB. The present paper is an outcome of the above training programme and it intends to explore whether the training programme met the expectation of the participants and how far they became able to achieve knowledge through it. The investigation reveals the fact that the trainees were satisfied with the overall management as well as topics included in the programme and that the knowledge acquired through it was also significantly high.

Objectives:

1. To create awareness about the importance of proper fertilizer application and water management. 2. To provide necessary knowledge, skills and methods of the fertilizer 3. To get feedback of the problems of fertilizer application and water management.

Methodology:

The study was aimed at the participants of the training programme. So, in order to know the depth of knowledge in the concerned subject matter areas, to get feed-back about the field experience of the trainees, to know administrative and technical problems faced by the participants, and to get suggestions for solution of those problems, a pre- training evaluation was made through a questionnaire. Similarly, to assess the performance of the participants, to have an idea about the overall impression of the participants about the training programme and also to know their suggestions for future improvement, a post-traininq evaluation was also administered. The subject areas covered in both the evaluation sheets are placed below separately: Pre-Training Evaluation: 1. Service career from the date of entry into the service uptodate including period of service, organization and job responsibility. 2. Previous in-service training programme attended by the participants including duration, nature and sponsoring authority and utilization of that training in their job, 3. Attitude of the participants towards attending in service training course including extent of training need in different fields with duration and time of such training course. 4. Participants' field problems including technical, administrative and others and their suggestions towards solution of those problems. 5. Taking stock of the existing subject matter knowledge of the participants before the training programme starts. Post Training Evaluation: 1. Opinion of the participants whether the training course would be beneficial for their jobs and if so, to what extent i.e, grading was measured. 2. Opinion as regards the subject matter included in the lectures by checking what topic (s) was more important for their job. 3. Opinion as regards the subject matter as to what topic's; may be omitted. 4. Opinion as regards the subject matters as to what more topics may be included in the future programme. 5. Opinion as regards the optimum duration of the course. 6. Opinion as regards other facilities which can be extended for the programme. The previous knowledge of the participants in the subject matter was gathered through the pre-test evaluation while, the additional knowledge earned by them was obtained through conducting a post evaluation. Finally, statistical analysis of marks obtained in pre and post-evaluation was made to draw the conclusion of the effectiveness of the training on the subject

Achievement/Findings:

The results obtained from the evaluation indicated that the training management and techniques involved in the programme were satisfactory and effective for acquiring knowledge and skill by the trainees on efficient use of fertilizer and irrigation water in crop production.
