Ecological Study of Shorea Robusta in Relation to Its Community at Chunia Under Madhupur Garh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The ecological study of the Madhupur garh under Chunia mouza showed that the forest stands comprise of more than 20 species of which Shores robuste predominates and there WBS no other co-dominant species in the forest. It was found that Shorea robusta has the highest density (2.84 meter^_-2 ) and relative density (87.09). It has 100% frequency and 7.50 relative frequency. The index of similarity was 46.15 having relative dominance 83.35 and importance value index 179.94.

Objectives:

To observe the ecological study of shorea robusta in relation to its community at chunia under madhupur garh

Methodology:

The study was carried out during January, 1977 May 1980. and March, 1982. The quadrat method of survey was followed in studying the vegetation. To determine the nature of the forest, two kinds of approaches for quantitative and qualitative analysis were made. In quantitative study, classification of surveyed area on the basis of plant number, height and size was made. In qualitative study, the analyses of community structure that encountered density, frequency and index of different plant community were considered and dat.i were analysed for interpretation about the nature of e co- system. In each study, six quadrat ware plotted at random in the area having that size of 15M X 15M and from these quadrats various quantitative characters of plant species ware made according to the method and procedures outlined by Dansereau (1957) and Shukla and Chandel (1977), A slight modification in the procedure was made in making stratification group and measuring diameter as followed by Sarker and Islam (1985). ln the study number of plant species, total number of individuate under each species, end basal diameter were recorded. For the study of stratification formed by the vegetation were primarily grouped into six categories. These were as follows ; Croup I : Plants having more than 25 M in height were recorded in this group. Group II: In this group, plant height ranged from 15 to 25M. Group III : This group consisted of plant having height from 10 - 15M, Group IV : Under this group, plant height ranged from 5 to 10M. Croup V: In this group, plants ranged from 2-5M. Group VI : In this group, plants measuring less than 2M in height were included, Besides the above mentioned plants, there were liana and climbers in the study area. They were classified and counted the numbers in each species. Finally, the forest floor was studied. At last. these data were utilized for calculation of density, relative density, frequency percentage, relative frequency, association index, relative dorninancs and importance value index.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above analysis it is clear that the Madhupur Garh is a sal forest covering almost 87% of the total plant population. But the basal diameter of the largest sal plant was only 51.31 cm which suggested that Gregorian type of sat is absent and only small sal trees are present. This might be due to unrestricted cutting of sal plants.
