The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Chandraghona, Rangamati hill district during June, 2004 to May, 2005 to know the influence of rootstock and time of T-budding on the success and performance of grafted Hybrid-T rose cultivar Mirandi. A randomized complete block (factorial) design was followed having three types of stock and six time of budding in every month from 15 October to 15 March. The rootstock Rosa gigantea showed superiority in on success of cutting and budding, branching, length of branch, number of leaves and flower production over China rose (Duck de berri or Archdule charles) and white rose (Rosa multiflora). Budding success and all other performances in all varieties were better when budded in 15 November, 15 December and 15 January. Rapid budbreak (6.67 days after budding) was observed in January 15 budding on Gigantea rootstock. The maximum success of budding (95.0%), shoot length (37.14cm), number of branches (3.23/plant) and flowers (1.47/plant) was found in the December 15 budding on Gigantea root stock.

To identify the suitable rootstock and proper time of T-budding for successful propagation of rose.

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Chandraghona, Rangamati hill district during June, 2004 to May, 2005. A randomized complete block (factorial) design was followed using three types of rootstock plants (S1 = Pink colored china rose - Duck de berri, S2 = non climber white rose - Rosa multiflora and S3 = wild cultivar Rosa gigantea with six time of budding (T1 = 15 October, T2 = 15 November, T3 = 15 December, T4 = 15 January, T5 = 15 February and T6 = 15 March) and replicated in thrice. Two years old commercial dark red (Maroon) Hybrid–T rose cultivar “Mirandi” was used as scion and rootstocks are raised from the stem cutting of White rose, China rose and wild cultivar Gigantea. Carefully prepared cuttings (slanting cut at proximal end and cross sectional cut at distal end) about 13-15cm long, 4-7mm diameter, 4-6 months aged shoots were placed at 450 slope, keeping one third above and two third below the ground level in previously prepared 12cmx15cm white polythene bags (filled with 25% sandy loam, 25% silty loam soil and 50% compost). A total of 2700 cuttings were placed (300/variety/replication) at 15 June 2004. The ploy bags were kept partial shade for 15 days under light sungrass mancha then the shade were removed and allowed to get full sunlight. Sufficient water was applied to keep the poly bags moisten that provides optimum rooting facilities. All the intercultural operations such as weeding, mulching and pruning of excess shoots were done as and when required. In mid September, most of the shoots were pruned keeping one healthy tender shoots per plant. Success of shots and suitable shoots for budding was recorded. Twenty suitable plants per treatment were selected about one month old, 15 to 30 cm long and 2 to 4 cm of diameter. Tender branch were selected for budding so that skin of the stock can easily be slipped from the woody portion of the stem. Scions (bud) were collected from the third to sixth upper most pre-sprouted nodes of just bloomed healthy flowering shoots. T-budding was done at the 15th of every month from October, 2004 to March, 2005. Three days shade was provided with paper to protect the bud from direct sunlight. The upper portion of the budded stocks was cut with a sharp knife about one centimeter above the bud as bud started sprouting between 7 to 21 days after budding. Data on success of budding, days to bud sprout, shoot length, number of leaves/plant, and number of flower/plant were recorded from all plants, calculated and analyzed statistically using M-STAT program.

Hybid-T rose can be budded from November to February using these three rootstocks i.e. China rose, White rose and Gigantea but the suitable time for budding of is November to January and better rootstock is the wild type rose Rosa gigantea. The skill and carefulness of the worker, optimum age and growth condition of scion and rootstocks are also important factors for success of budding. Among these three months, any times when the scion material have fully-formed, mature, dormant buds usually just after flowering and the rootstock be in a condition of active growth that the vascular cambium is actively growing, and the bark can be peeled easily from the stock piece with little damage is suitable for successful budding.
