A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, and Rangamati during April to December in 2003 and 2004. The experiment was conducted with seven summer tomato varieties (BINA Tomato-2, BINA Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-5, BARI Tomato-6 (Chaiti), BARI Tomato-10 (Anupama) and BARI Tomato-11 (Jhumka)) as sub plot treatments and two planting time (May 15 and July 15) as main plot treatments. Different varieties showed significant differences in days to 50 % flowering and harvesting, plant height, number of fruits/plant, fruit size, yield, profit and benefit cost ratio while planting time had no significant effect on yield or profitability in both the years. BARI tomato-11 (Jhumka) produced maximum (61.4) number of small (6.9 g) fruits/plant followed by BARI Tomato-10 (Anupama) (37.6/plant) while BARI Tomato–6 (Chaiti) produced the lowest number (15.4/plant) of larger (70.1 g) fruits per plant. BARI Tomato–6 (Chaiti) gave bigger fruits (5.01 x 5.01 cm), maximum fruit yield (25.45 t/ha), net return (Tk. 7.91 lakh/ha) and benefit cost ratio (4.48) while BARI tomato-11 (Jhumka) gave minimum fruit yield (8.14 t/ha) with the lowest net return (Tk. 0.99 lakh/ha) and BCR (1.41).

To select the most suitable variety (s) of tomato for summer cultivation in the hilly areas. To investigates the comparative yield and profitability of seven released summer tomato varieties at early (May) and late (July) summer planting in the south-eastern hilly areas in Bangladesh.

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill district during April to December in 2003 and 2004. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The experiment consists of two factors i.e. seven summer tomato varieties (BINA Tomato-2, BINA Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-5, BARI Tomato-6 (Chaiti), BARI Tomato-10 (Anupama) and, BARI Tomato-11 (Jhumka)) and two planting time (May 15 and July 15). The variety and planting time were placed in subplot and main plot, respectively. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam having pH 5.5 and less organic matter (0.78%). The land was manured and fertilized @ cowdung 10 t/ha, urea 550 kg/ha, TSP 450 kg/ha, MP 250 kg/ha and gypsum 100 kg/ha. The 50% amount of Cowdung was applied at the final land preparation. The remaining half of Cowdung, entire amount of TSP and one third of urea and MP were applied at the time of pit preparation and the rest were applied in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after planting (DAP) and mixed thoroughly with the soil. Two and half metre wide polytunnel was prepared with bamboo, rope, and transparent polythene sheets (3.5 m wide and 0.10 mm thick). One month-old double transplanting (seedlings first transplanted to another beds at 7-10 days after emergence for proper growth and adventitious rooting so that the seedling become short, stout and shock proof) seedlings were planted in 5 x 1m raised beds under polytunnel maintaining 60 x 40 cm plant spacing, which accommodates 24 plants per plot. Bamboo sticks were given and tied the plants with the sticks to prevent lodging. Weeding, mulching, pruning, irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Dimecron (0.2%) was sprayed before flowering to control Jassids and white fly but after fruit setting no insecticides was sprayed because there was no severe insect infestation. Tomatotone (4-parachlorophenoxy-acetic acid) @ 20ppm was applied on blooming flowers of the varieties of BARI Tomato-4 and BARI Tomato-5. Tomatotone was not sprayed on other varieties. Data on 50% flowering, number and weight of fruits per plant and single fruit weight, length, breadth, shape and colour of the fruit were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants. Total yield/plot was taken and then it was converted to yield/ hectare. Number of plant survived, plant height etc was recorded at the time of last harvest. Cost of cultivation, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio were calculated on the basis of the market value of inputs (manure and fertilizer, tunnel materials, insecticides etc.), labour (Tk.70.00/day) and tomato (Tk. 40.00/kg) in the local market. Consumer’s acceptance was determined on the basis of the survey reports among local peoples. Data on all characters were analyzed through MSTAT program and the treatment means were separated by DMRT for interpretation of the results.

The maximum fruit yield/plant (805 g) as well as fruit yield/ha (28.17 tons) was obtained from BARI tomato-6 planted at July 15. Maximum gross return (Tk. 11.27 lakh/ha), net return (Tk. 9.00 lakh/ha) and benefit cost ratio (4.96) were also recorded from BARI Tomato-6 planted at July 15. Considering the yield, profitability, quality and consumer’s acceptability it can be concluded that BARI tomato-6 (Chaiti) is the best variety for summer cultivation in the eastern hilly areas of Bangladesh.
