Long-term Water Table Fluctuation Pattern and Trend Analysis in the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain Aquifer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For sustainable use of ground water, monitoring of existing depth to water table and long-term trend analysis is an imperative. Water table (WT) data of 37 observation wells from II different thanas of Mymensingh district in the old Brahmaputra flood plain aquifer for the period of 1985 to 2004 were analyzed to quantify their long-term fluctuation pattern and trend. The results revealed that the depth to WT at the beginning and end or the study period varied with locations. With few exceptions, the depth to WT showed declining trend in almost all the well. On an average, WT declined from about 5 m in 1985 to about 9 m in 2004. Long-term prediction of WT by using linear trend shows that in many cases the depth to WT will be about double of its present depth by the year 2050 if the current declining trend continues. Increased pumping cost, undesired ecological changes and water scarcity are the likely consequences of the increased WT depth.

Methodology:

The data of groundwater water table (1985 - 2004) were collected from the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). The data set comprised or 37 observation wells from different thanas of Mymensingh district as listed. The seasonal and long-term variation of water table was presented graphically to explain the dynamics of groundwater system. The yearly maximum depth to water table was used to find long-term trend. The probable depth to WT in different wells for the foreseeing period was predicted using the generalized equation of linear trend (regression model). The simulated water table depth was regressed as: WTB + Q (simulation year base year) Where B Intercept of linear regression equation, Q Slope of linear regression equation

Achievement/Findings:

The depth to water table of almost all the wells in the study area declined slowly in the aquifer during 1985-2004 In many cases, the depth is predicted to be about double of the present depth by the year 2050 if the present trend continues. This will increase water scarcity and the cost of irrigation water. Many environmental consequences will also appear. So. necessary measures need to be taken to avoid groundwater measures need to be taken to avoid groundwater mining.
