Group Composition of Humus in Some Forest and Adjoining Cultivated Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Organic carbon and the composition of humus were studied in the surface horizons of forest and adjoining cultivated soils of different topography. Total organic carbon varied between 0.59 and 1.67 per cent. In humus humin fraction was more than alkalipyrophosphate extractable fraction. In the extractable fraction, fulvic acid was more than humic acid in almost all the soils under similar forest vegetation. organic carbon was more in soils of higher topography than that in soils of rower topography carbon content of humin fraction was row and that of humic scid was more in soils of higher than that of rower topography, Fulvic acid content decreased from higher topography towards rower topography in the Madhupur forest soils, opposite trend was found in Chittagong forest soils, in all the soils major portion of the humic acid was present as "free and combined with mobile forms of R₂O₃. Humic acid of soils of higher topography was less resistant to electrolytes and more hydrophobic in nature.

Objectives:

To have a better understanding of the chemical, physical and biological processes of soil and also that of soil genesis and soil fertility.

Methodology:

Soil samples were collected from two different areas, viz ; (1) Madhupur and (2) Chittagong. Soil series were selected from two topographic positions. Samples collected from upper topographic positions (Belabo and Noadda of Madhupur forest, and Rangapani and Nalua of Chittagong forest) were from soils under forest cover, while those collected from lower topography (Kalma and Bijipur) were from cultivated rice fields. At selected sites, pits were opened and samples were collected from various genetic horizons. The soil series were correlated with FAO/UNESCO soil classification system. The method of Day (1965) was used for particle-size analysis and the textural class was determined by Marshall's triangular Co-ordinates. Soil pH was measured electrochemically by using corning (Modei-7) glass electrode pH meter with a soil : water ratio of 1 : 2.5. Kjeldahl's method was used for determining total soil nitrogen. Organic carbon was determined by Tyurin's (1931, 1936) modified method (Simakov, 1957). The group composition of humus was determined by the alkali-pyrophosphate method of Kononova and Bel'chikova (1961).
