A Study to Evaluate the Efficiency of Digested Slurry of Organic Wastes as Manure on the Growth of Rice Plant

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot culture experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of the digested slurry as manure on the growth of BR4 rice. Total uptake of N, P, K, by rice plant was observed at different stages of growth. It was found that the highest uptake of 63 mg of N, 9 mg of P and 116 mg of K was obtained with digested slurry of rice straw applied @ 20 mgN/kg soil. The maximum grain yield of 3.l5g/plant was obtained with digested slurry of water hyacinth while straw yield of 5.75g/plant was obtained with rice straw slurry when both applied @ 20 mg N/kg soil.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficiency of the digested slurry as manure on the growth of BR4 rice.

Methodology:

Composite soil sample at a depth of 0-12 cm was collected from a field at Fatullah in Dhaka district. After air drying and processing, some of the physical and chemical properties of the soil were determined. The soil is clay loam in texture with pH 5.7, oxidizable carbon 0.82%, total nitrogen 0.13%,total phosphorus 0.07% and total potassium 0.36%. Greenhouse experiment : A pot culture experiment with 1 kg soil per earthen pot was set-up in the botanical garden, Dhaka university. The digested slurry was air dried and ground prior to use. Digested slurry of waterhyacinth with 1.71%N, 0.20%P and 2.16%K, digested slurry of rice straw having 1.55%N, 0.14%P and 0.48%K and that of sawdust with 1.58%N,0.13%P and 0.l6%K were added to 1kg soil at different nitrogen levels, such as, l0mgN/kg, l5 mgN/kg and 20 mgN/kg soil and were thoroughly mixed with the soil. The pots were arranged in completely randomized design in triplicates. Simultaneously, the same treatments with urea were included in this experiment for comparison. Five week old seedlings of BR-4 were transplanted in each pot at approximately equal distance from one another. Water was added occasionally during growing period, no water was added at the grain maturing stage but the soil was remained moist due to rainfall. The plant samples were collected at random from each pot at the first stage (60 days from the date of transplantation) and all the remaining plant samples were collected at the harvesting stage ( 120 days from the date of transplantation ) and pellicles were then separated. Plant analysis : The rice plants with roots and flowers were washed with distilled water and then dried in an oven at 60-70?C and the dry weights were recorded in both stages and ground to fine powder. Wet washing of plant samples were made according to the procedure described by Jackson (1958). The determination of phosphorus was clone according the vanadomolybdate yellow colour method and that of potassium was in an EEL flame photometer. Plant nitrogen was determined according to Kjeldahl's method.
