Stability for Physiological Maturity and Kernel Yield Over Locations in Maize (zea Mays L.) Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten composite varieties of maize were evaluated for stability of physiological maturity and kernel yield at five different locations vIz. Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Ishurdi and Hathazart during rabi season. Genotype-location interactions were observed for both the characters. Except three, all early and late genotypes were average in response (b_i = 1) and stable (S²bi = 0) over locations for physiological maturity. The highest yielding genotype Guayabal Aragua 4843 with above average stability (b_i < 1) and minimum deviation (S²d_i = 0) was the least responsive entry and found suitable for low-yielding environment. Camayagua 8528 and Across 8536 with P> x and minimum deviations had below average stability (b_i> 1) and could be considered suitable for high-yielding environment. Capinopolis 8645 RE, with P> x ,b_i= 1 and S²d_i = 0 was the only genotype most stable over all the environments studied.

Objectives:

To determine the performance and stability of ten genotypes of maize grown under varying environments in different locations.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Ishurdi and Hathazari Research Stations of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during the rabi season of 1991-92. Eight exotic composites of maize collected from CIMMYT and two local check varieties. Barnali and Mohar, were tested. The entries were sown on November 18 at Joydebpur and Jamalpur and on November 19, 23 and December 6, 1991 at Ishurdi, Hathazari and Jessore, respectively. A randomized complete block design with three repltcatu.us was used. Plot size was 5 m x 3 m. Seeds were sown in plots in four 5 m long rows at 75 cm x 25 cm spacing. Two healthy seedlings were kept per hill after thinning. Recommended cultural practices were followed in all locations. Data on physiological maturity was recorded in days from sowing to when 80 per cent plants developed black layers at the abscission layer of the kernels. Kernel yield was computed from the field weight of ears considering 80 per cent shelling recovery and was adjusted to 15 per cent moisture content. Prior to combined analysis Bartlett's test was done for testing the homogeneity of error variances. Combined analysis of variance for stability was performed according to Singh and Chaudhury (1976). As the genotype-location interaction against pooled error was highly significant for both the characters studied.

This genotype should be used in hybridization programme as it can be expected to transmit high mean yield to and increase phenotypic stability in their progenies.
