Effect of Soil Moisture Stress on the Availabiltty and Uptake of N, P and K by Wheat Plants and Growth, Yield and Qualtty of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

soil moisture stresses ranging from field capacity (F. C.) to wilting coefficient (W. C.) were imposed in repeated cycles or at different growth stages to study its effect on the availability and uptake of N, P and K by wheat plants and growth, yield and quality of wheat (Jupateco variety) under fertilized and unfertilized conditions. Stress imposed beyond F. C. .. .. .. 1/2 F. C. produced decrease in N and P availability and their uptake by wheat plants. However, K availability and uptake was little affected by moisture stress. Wheat plants grew well and produced better yield at moisture levels F. C, and F. C. .. .. .. 1/2 F. C. compared to other stresses. The quality or grain was also affected similarly. Moisture stresses of F.C. and F. C. .. .. .. 1/2 F. C. gave similar and better results compared to other stresses. Moisture stresses of 1/2 F. C........W.C. and 1/3 F. C........W.C. resulted harmful effects. Stress imposed at tillering, flowering and harvesting stages resulted moderate effects.

Objectives:

Soil moisture stresses ranging from field capacity (F. C.) to wilting coefficient (W. C.) were imposed in repeated cycles or at different growth stages to study its effect on the availability and uptake of N, P and K by wheat plants and growth, yield and quality of wheat (Jupateco variety) under fertilized and unfertilized conditions

Methodology:

The Silmondi surface soil used in this investigation was collected from Noapara near Madhabdi, district Dhaka at a depth of 0-18 cm. The soil containd 2.24%, 41.40% and 26.36% sand, silt and clay, respectively as determined by the hydrometer method (Bouyoucos,1928). Field capacity (F.C.) of the soil was 21 (Wilde et al.,1979),. pH (glass electrode method) and organic matter content (Walkley and Black, 1934) were 6.5 and 1.02% respectively. Available N, P and K of soil were extracted by 2 NKCI, N/500 H₂SO₄ and 1N NH₄OAc and were determined by micro-kjeldahl, colorimeter and flame photometer respectively. For green house experiment 5kg air dry soil was taken in each plastic pot. A basal dose of fertilizer was added to half of the pots at the recommended dose by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Instituted, which was 230, 185 and 80 kg /ha of Urea, TSP and MP, respectively. Water was added to each pot to bring the soil to field condition. Experimental design: The experiment contained 2variables: (i) moisture stress arid (ii) fertilized/unfertilized. By combination of the above 'variables' the following treatments were obtained : M₁F M₂F M₃F M₄F M₅F M₆F M₇F M₈F M₉F M₁₀F M₁F₀ M₂F₀ M₃F₀ M₄F₀M₅F₀ M₆F₀ M₇F₀ M₈F₀M₉F₀ M₁₀F₀ where M_1-10, F and F₀ stands for moisture stress, fertilized and unfertilized respectively. Each pot was replicated 3 times and the pots were arranged in completely randomized design.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded from the findings of this experiment that in case of moisture scarcity moisture stress upto F. C.. .. 1/2 F. C. may be allowed for the Jupateco variety of wheat.
