Effect of Water Quality on Cooking and Reeling Performances of Nistari and Hybrid Cocoons

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The dependency of cooking and reeling performances of mulberry cocoons on water obtained from various natural sources has been studied. For this purpose, some important reeling parameters viz, cooking degree, renditta, reel ability %, gropping %, raw silk recovery % and silk waste % have been measured. Results revealed that silk quality has been found to be dependent on hardness of the water used. The river water having low degree of hardness (~120mg/1 as CaC0₃) is found to be much more suitable for cooking and reeling than those collected from other sources like tube well (hardness~295mg/l), bore-well water (hardness~ 340mg/l) etc and even better than the deionised water.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different sources of water in cooking of cocoons and reeling performances to produce quality raw silk.

Methodology:

Commercially available multivoltine Nistari cocoons were purchased from Mirgonj area, Rajshahi and hybrid cocoons was collected from Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute (BSRTI), Rajshahi. Good cocoons were sorted out manually. The collected cocoons were dried in a hot air dryer, following the temperature pattern of 110°-100°-90°-80°-70°C for a period of 5 hours to achieve optimum drying of multivol tine and hybrid cocoons with the degree of drying of 39-40%. The optimum hot air dried cocoons were conditioned for a period of seven days before taking for reeling. The optimum dried cocoons were cooked using two-pan system following the temperature profile of 50°-90°-65°-95° to 80°C for seven minutes. The cooked cocoons are brushed at 80°C before taking for reeling. The dried cocoons were placed in steam chest for one minute and then in cooking chamber for seven minutes.Water samples from three different natural sources namely (i) river, (ii) tube-well and (iii) bore-well were used during this study. The river water was collected from the river Padma near Kazihata area of Rajshahi city. The tube- well water was collected from the campus of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Rajshahi. The bore-well water was collected from Fudkipara of Rajshahi city. The preparation of deionised water, as well as the determination of water quality parameters like temporary hardness, total hardness, conductivity, pH etc. were performed in the research laboratory of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Rajshahi. The reeling parameters viz., cooking degree, renditta, reelability %, gropping %, raw silk recovery %, and silk waste % etc. were studied at BSRTI, Rajshahi. Raw silk quality characteristics viz., winding break, size, tenacity, elongation and cohesion were tested. Two types of reeling appliances were used in the investigation namely the Japanese multiend reeling machine and the BSRTI innovated cottage reeling machine.

Achievement/Findings:

From the foregoing results and discussion, it is inferred that water quality greatly influenced the cooking and reeling performances of cocoon as well as raw silk quality. So, quality and quantity raw silk production could be achieved significantly if quality water is used during reeling operations.
