Effect of Npk on the Availability and Uptake of Some Trace Elements by Tea Plant

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For a long time agricultural scientists have endevoured to evaluate soils for purposes of growing crops and to determine fertilizer needs for maximum crop out put by chemical analysis of soil. More recently attention has been directed for establishment of “critical levels” for the different plant components in the different parts of the plant to evaluate arbitrary values for ideal growth in as much as the nutritive value is concerned.Significant correlation coefficient were obtained between exchangeable Manganese, copper, zinc and boron of soils at both depths and their uptake by tea plants. Therefore, it was concluded that the variation in growth of tea plants would be primarily because of the variation in the absorption of trace elements. To increase tea production, micro nutrient problems must be investigated. The results indicated that tea would be benefited by the Judicial application of trace elements such as Manganese, copper, zinc and boron.

Objectives:

The present investigation to study the effects of different doses of NPK on the availability and uptake of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Bo, by tea plants and correlation status were also made between these constituents in soils and in plants

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at the Pakistan Tea Research Station" Srimangal, Sylhet, East pakistan. The area under the present investigation was brought under Tea Cultivation in 1960-61, before that the area had been under scrap Jungle. The soil, belonged to Srimangal series, consists of well drained soils developed in old Holocene or late pleistocene piedmont terrace deposit. These soils have a brown to yellowish brown, very friable fine sandy loam to sandy clay loam top soil with sub-angular blocky to granular structure and very strongly acid, Hasan K.A. (1967) The experiment was in a 33 factorial design with three level of each treatments (table-I). A total of twenty seven treatments were replicated four times. Soil samples were collected from each plot corresponding to each treatment from 0-9' and 9-18" depth from the surface. Tea leaves were also collected from plants growing on each plot, when the plants were four Year's old. Soil samples collected from each plot were air dried, ground and screened through 100 mesh sieve and were preserved in bottles for chemical analysis and leaf samples were oven dried at a temperature 60ºC, Powdered and preserved in the air tight bottles for chemical analysis. Soil samples were chemically analysed for exchangeable Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Bo. Exchangeable iron, Manganese and copper were determined from the ammonium acetaie leachate of the soil using an unicamp flame photometre, Sp-900. Exchangeable Zinc was determined by using 0.005 dithizone solution as described by Prince (1955) with the help of an Unicamp Spectro-photometer Sp-600, from the ammonium acetate lechate of the soil. Boron was estimated by using quinaligarine colorometric method as described by Jackson (1962).Iron, Manganese, copper, Zinc and Borron contents of the tea leaves were determined in the Nitric-perchloric acid extract using the methods as described before.

Achievement/Findings:

Application of nitrogenous fertilizer alone or in combination increased the availability of Fe, Mn and Zn in Soils and their uptake by tea plants; but decreased the availability of Boron in soils and its uptake by tea plants. Phosphorus application increased the availability and uptake of Fe, Mn and Zn but decreased the availability and uptake of Boron by Tea plants. Potassium application also increased the uptake and availability of Fe, Mn and Zn but decreased the availability of Boron. Significant correlation coefficients were obtained between available manganese, Boron, Copper and Zinc at both depths and their uptake by tea plants. It was, therefore, concluded that the variation in growth of tea plants would be primarily because of trace elements. To increase tea production, micro nutrient problems must be investigated. Tea would be benefited by the judicial application of trace elements such as Manganese Copper, Zinc and Boron.
