Effect of Inoculum Levels of Potato Virus Y (pvy) on Yield and Subsequent Spread of the Disease Under Insecticide Spray and Unsprayed Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The spread of potato virus Y and yield loss due to the disease as influenced by the level of inoculum was studied by planting varying per cents (0, 10, 20, 30) of infected tubers along with apparently healthy .ones both under spraying and non-spraying conditions. The inoculum level significantly influenced both spread of the disease and yield reduction, the effect being directly proportional although the difference between 0 and 10 % inoculum was not clear. Spread of the disease was slightly lower under the condition of insecticide spray. Yield loss was slightly higher in Kufri Lalima than in Cardinal.

Objectives:

To study the effect of inoculum levels of PVY of yield and subsequent spread of the virus in two potato varieties under spraying and non-spraying of insecticide.

Methodology:

Tubers known to be infected with PVY were planted with apparently healthy tubers of the varieties Cardinal and Kufri Lalima at the rate of 10. 20 and 30 % of the total. The planting was done at the Tuber Crops Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur on December 2. 1989. One treatment without infected tuber was also included as control. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block with four replications. The unit plot size was 1.8 x 3.0 m where 30 tubers were accommodated at 30 cm x 60 cm spacing. Infected tubers were scattered uniformly in the plots. Wheat was planted around each unit plot as barrier of aphids. There were two sets of plots, one for insecticide spraying and the other for non-spraying. Recommended doses of fertilizers were applied. Irrigation and other agronomical practices were done as and when necessary. In the spraying experiment, Dimecron at the rate of 1 m1/1 was sprayed from the 7th day after emergence and continued up to maturity of the crop at 12 days interval. The crop was harvested on March 5, 1990 and single tuber samples were collected from each of the plants except those that were used as the source of inoculum. The collected tubers were preserved in a cold store for observation in the next season.

During the 1990-91 crop season the tuber samples were planted in the field at Joydebpur on 26.11.90 following the same design as in the previous year. The crop was sprayed with insecticide to prevent primary infection of aphid transmitted virus diseases. Data on percentage of plants showing symptom of PVY were recorded visually on 35 and 45th day after planting. The crop was harvested on 28.2.91 and the yield per plot was recorded.Per plant yield loss due to different inoculum levels of PVY were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study it appears that for potato production up to 10 % PVY inoculum (infected plant) in the field do not cause significant yield loss and, yield loss and spread of the disease increase with the increase in inoculum levels of PVY.
