A Study on the Various Factors That Affected in the Variation of Ph in Some Representative Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The pH values differed significantly from place to place. Significant correlation coefficients at 1% level were obtained between pH and free calcium carbonate, free Iron oxide, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium, exchangeable Aluminium, exchangeable Iron or Organic matter. Significant correlation coefficients at 5% level were also obtained between pH and amount of clay and cation exchange capacity. However, variations observed in soil pH was related to variation in exchangeable calcium, magnesium, Iron and Aluminium, Free Iron oxide and organic matters of the soils

Objectives:

To study the pH of some representative soils of Bangladesh and the important factors that affected in the variation of soil pH.

Methodology:

Soil samples representing seven tracts of Bangladesh were collected from various places of Bangladesh. The samples were air dried, ground and screened through a 2 mm sieve. They were properly preserved in the bottles, for chemical analysis. The methods for the mechanical and chemical analyses of soil are as follows: (i) pH : pH was determined by using glass electrode (Pye electric pH meter), the soil solution ratio being 1:1. (ii) The mechanical analysis was carried out by hydrometer method as described by Piper (1951). (iii) Organic carbon was determined volumetrically by wet oxidation with K₂Cr₂O₇, and H₂SO₄ and subsequent rapid titration with normal FeSO₄ solution, (Walkley & Black, 1934). Percentage of Organic matter was obtained by multiplying the percentage of organic carbon by a factor 1.724 as suggested by Smith and Weldon (1941). (iv) Free iron oxide was determined by Karim’s (1953) nascent hydrogen reduction method with Zn-dust and potassium oxalate oxalic acid solution buffered at pH 3.5. The soil solvent ratio was 1 : 2.5 (v) Free calcium carbonate was determined mechanically by Collin’s calcimeter (vi) Exchangeable calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium and iron were determined by using Sp 900 flame photometer in normal KCI extracts. (vii) Cation exchange capacity was determined in ammonium acetate extract as outlined by Jackson (1962). (viii) Silica was determined by fusion method as outlined by Jackson (1962).

Achievement/Findings:

In this particular study, the soil pH was kept fixed and (a) Organic matter (b) cation exchange capacity (c) exchangeable calcium (d) exchangeable magnesium (e) exchangeable aluminium (f) exchangeable iron (g) clay and (h) free Fe₂O₃ were considered variably. From a comparison of the distribution of observed values with respect to the regression, the exchangeable calcium, magnesium, cation exchange capacity fall very close to expected values which suggested as before that with the increase in pH, the capacity also progressively increased and the exchangeable calcium, magnesium contents proportionately increased. Similar distributions were also observed in case of organic matter, exchangeable aluminium, exchangeable iron, and free Fe₂O₃ but with the increase in pH the organic matter, exchangeable aluminium, exchangeable iron, and free Fe₂O₃ contents of soils decreased. The distribution of clay contents and calcium carbonate with respect to the linear regression line drawn between pH and amount of clays and calcium carbonates. It was to note that the observed values (clay contents) were very scatterly distributed, correlation coefficients were also significant at 5% levels only. This suggested that though with the increase in pH the amounts of clays and calcium carbonate decreased, but these changes were not as pronounced as those mentioned earlier.
