The experiment was initiated in T Aman 2007 and Boro 2007-08 at BRRI farm Gazipur to determine the P response behavior of MVs (BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan 49 in T. Aman, and BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan45 in Boro season) and Hybrid rice (EH1 and EH2) in low soil P condition.  Available soil P ranges were 5.50 ± 0.82 ppm, 5.95 ± 0.88 ppm, 6.75 ± 0.61 ppm, 8.62 ± 2.13 ppm and 9.74 ± 1.36 during T. Aman season, while, in Boro it ranges from 2.64 ± 0.88, 5.31 ± 0.67, 7.39 ± 0.70, 13.13 ± 1.50 and 15.26 ± 0.75. In T. Aman season soil available P did not influence rice yield. The prevailing high temperature during T. Aman rice growing period may increase P availability to fulfill crop requirement. BRRI dhan30 indicating its varietal capability to extract more inherent soil P absorption capacity or high P use efficiency. In Boro season, EH1 and EH2 gave significantly higher grain yield than MVs at higher soil P level. In T. Aman season, the highest P uptake was observed in EH2 where soil P level was 9.74 ppm. Relatively higher P uptake was found in EH2 followed by EH1 and inbreeds. It was clearly indicated that at higher P levels during Boro seasons hybrid entries may utilize more P efficiently than inbred varieties. But in T. Aman season the response of rice varieties in P deficient level was insignificant.

To select the rice varieties/advanced lines tolerant to low available soil P

The experiment was initiated in T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2007-08 at BRRI farm Gazipur at varying inherent soil P levels. The design of experiment was split plot having P fertilizer in the main plot and variety in the sub plot. The treatments were repeated thrice. Among 15 plots, three plots of similar soil available P levels were considered as three replications. Available P ranges of the five main-plots were, 5.50 ± 0.82 ppm, 5.95 ± 0.88 ppm, 6.75 ± 0.61 ppm, 8.62 ± 2.13 ppm and 9.74 ± 1.36 during T. Aman season. In each main plot 4 varieties (BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan49, EH1 and EH2) were planted having an area of 4 m x 1.5 m. In the Boro season soil P level were, 2.64 ± 0.88, 5.31 ± 0.67, 7.39 ± 0.70, 13.13 ± 1.50 and 15.26 ± 0.75 and tested variety were BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan45, EH1 and EH2. Each plot received a flat dose of NKS as STB recommendation. Urea-N was applied in three 3 equal splits at final land preparation, at active tillering stage and at 5-7 days before PI stage. Grain yield was recorded from 5 m2 areas at the center part of each plot and 16 hills were collected for straw yield. The grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.

In T. Aman season soil available P did not influence rice yield even in very low P condition. The prevailing high temperature during T. Aman rice growing period may increase P availability to fulfill crop requirement. BRRI dhan30 indicating its varietal capability to extract more inherent soil P absorption capacity or high P use efficiency. In Boro season, EH1 and EH2 gave significantly higher grain yield than MVs at higher soil P level. In T. Aman season, the highest P uptake (16 kg/ha) was observed in EH2 where soil P level was 9.74 ppm and lowest P uptake (5 kg/ha) was found in BRRI dhan30, where soil P level was 5.5 ppm.
