The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI farm during Aus, T. Aman and Boro season, 2000-2001 to study the algae control by water management and its effect on the growth and yield of rice. Two water management practices i.e, (i) maintained 6 cm water in the plot ii) maintained saturated condition of the plot, and three times eradication of algae at different days after transplanting (DAT) of rice I.e., (i) no eradication (control), ii) eradication at 25 DAT iii) eradication throughout the growing season of rice. BR26 in Aus, BRRI dhan32 in T. Aman and BRRI dhan29 in Boro season were used for experimental purpose. The results revealed that the plant height and bearing tiller hill-1 were significantly differed for water management and algae eradication but panicle length and grain yield were not affected significantly in Aus season. During T. Aman season, grain yield (5.73 tha-1) was the highest in the plot of saturated condition × no eradication which was statistically identical with saturated condition× eradication at 30 DAT and the lowest was in 6 cm water level × eradication at 25 and 30 DAT due to the unfavorable condition for algae development in saturated soil condition. In Boro season, studied characters of BRRI dhan29 were significantly influenced except panicle length. The highest number of bearing tiller hill-1 (18.0) was obtained in saturated condition × algae eradication throughout the growing season and the lowest was in saturated condition × eradication at 25 DAT plots. Grain yield was the highest in saturated condition × eradication throughout the season which were statistically identical with 6 cm water level × eradication of algae at 25 DAT. It may be concluded that algae management in different seasons by water management and eradication at different DAT varies for season to season. This might be due to variation of climatic conditions that favored or disfavored of algae growth and development in the rice field. However, it is better to maintain the saturated condition of soil. This needs further study to identify the better way of algae management.

The experiment comprised of two water management practices i.e, (i) maintained 6 cm water in the plot ii) maintained saturated condition of the plot, and three times eradication of algae at different days after transplanting (DAT) of rice i.e., (i) no eradication (control), ii) eradication at 25 DAT iii) eradication throughout the growing season of rice. BR26 in Aus, BRRI dhan32 in T. Aman and BRRI dhan29 in Boro were used for experimental purpose. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. BRRI recommended rate of fertilizers were applied in the plot at different seasons and all other cultural operations like weeding, insect-pest and disease management was done as and when necessary. Data of different growth stages and yield parameters of rice were collected. The collected data were analyzed and adjudged with standard statistical procedure.

Algae are commonly present in irrigation water and generally the rate they multiply is balanced by natural degeneration. However, when the balance is upset through increased sunshine or by the introduction of extra nutrients, the rate of growth increases and the algae blooms become a problem in rice crops. The effects of algae on rice crops mainly are inhibition of seedling germination and vigor; uprooted seedlings insecurely anchored due to respiratory and photosynthetic gases become trapped around seedlings, competition for nutrients with rice. Evaluating the effect of algae grown in the rice field, it was observed that algae grown in the field did not affect significantly on the growth and yield contributing characters of rice in different rice growing seasons. It may be concluded that algae management in different seasons by water management and eradication at different DAT varies for season to season. This might be due to variation of climatic conditions that favored or disfavored of algae growth and development in the rice field. However, it is better to maintain the saturated condition of soil. But, it is difficult to maintain such situation due to lack of irrigation facilities and rainfall situation of Bangladesh. This needs further study to identify the better way of algae management. In fact, whether it is necessary to algae eradication or not in the rice field.
