Performance of Hyv Rice Under Irrigated and Rainfed Condition as Affected by Land Preparation with Different Tillage Implements

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI Farm during Aus season 2000 in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications to study the effect of land preparation by different tillage implements on the growth and yield of rice. The unit plot size was 30 m² and BR26 was used as experimental purpose. Two types of land preparing implements i.e., (i) Power tiller and (ii) Hydro tiller were used for land preparation in irrigated and rainfed land condition. Results revealed that land prepared by hydro tiller produced longer panicle, higher number of tiller hill^-1 and ultimately higher grain and straw yield. There was no significant difference effect in case of plant height. Land preparation by power tiller required less number of laborers compare to land prepared by hydro tiller. These might be due to congenial condition of BRRI soil where plough pan is disturbed in many spots where hydro tiller is suitable for land preparation. Irrigated condition gave taller plant longer panicle higher number of tiller hill^-1, grain and straw yield than with rainfed condition. It was mainly due to irrigation for growth and development for rice. In irrigated condition, higher number of labor was required for irrigated condition compared with rainfed condition. It was due to labor required for irrigation work. Interaction effect of land preparation and water management was significantly differed for labor requirement and number of tiller hill^-1, although it was not significantly differed in case of plant height, panicle length, grain and straw yield. Higher labor was required for power tiller x irrigated condition, which was identical with hydro tiller x rainfed condition, lowest labor required for hydro tiller x rainfed condition. Although, tiller number hill^-1 differed significantly, there is no significant difference in grain yield due to interaction effect.

Objectives:

To study the effect of land preparation by different tillage implements on the growth and yield of rice.
To see the suitability of tillage implements at irrigated and rainfed condition for rice cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI Farm during Aus season 2000 in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications to study the performance of HYV rice under irrigated and rainfed condition as affected by land preparation with different Tillage Implements. The unit plot size was 30 m² and BR26 variety was used as experimental purpose. Two types of land preparing implements i.e., (i) Power tiller and (ii) Hydro tiller were used for land preparation in irrigated and rainfed land condition. BRRI recommended fertilizers such as Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc were applied at the rate of 127-52-60-16-2.5 kgha^-1. Whole amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc and one-third urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest of three equal splits of urea were applied at 45 and 55 days after transplanting (DAT). All other cultural operations like weeding, insect-pest and disease management was done as and when necessary. Yield and yield components data were collected at maturity of the crop. Time requirement (man-dayha^-1) for weeding, harvesting and threshing were recorded during the period of operation where, 8 hours work for laborers was considered as one man-day. Collected data were analyzed by following the standard statistical procedure and the mean differences were adjudged by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Effect of land preparation by Power Tiller and Hydro tiller showed that the growth and yield of BR26 rice was better in those plot that prepared by Hydro tiller in the BRRI farm condition (where soil is very soft). On the other hand, comparing the rainfed and irrigated condition, crop performances were better in the irrigated condition than rainfed condition. Therefore, land preparation by Hydro tiller in the irrigated condition is better than the land prepared by power tiller in the soft soil of marshy land condition. Labor requirement was lower in the Hydro tiller operation and rainfed condition.
