Variation in Some Physiological Characters of Wheat Under Varying Soil Moisture Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three pot-culture experiments were carried out during 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1986-87 with the objectives to identify the peak period of growth and the effect of soil moisture stress on growth rate. Seven treatments of varying soil moisture stress were applied. All soil moisture stress reduced FLA. CGR. RGR and NAR. Soil moisture stress throughout growing period also reduced LAI. But stress at different growth stages showed different patterns in LAI. The varietal differences for these characters were also significant. Sonalika although produced higher LAI in the early periods of growth but later on decreased and showed lowest LAI from 75 days of growth. In all other cases Sonalika produced highest FLA. CGR. RGR. NAR and HI while Inia 66 produced the lowest. The 30-45 and 60-75 days showed maximum growth. In all cases as the severity of drought increased physiological yield components such as LAI. FLA. CGR. RGR and NAR were decreased. All the characters except LAI showed significant positive correlation with yield. The strongest correlation was found in RGR.

Objectives:

To identify the peak period of growth and varietal response to soil moisture stress on growth rates of different varieties of wheat. So that necessary management can be made at the sensitive period of growth.

Methodology:

The study was carried out with three high yielding varieties of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) namely; Sonalika (V 1), Kanchan (V 2) and Inia 66(V 3) during 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1986-87. Soil used in the experiments was analyzed and found to contain 0.092% total N, 18.7ppm available p and 0.256 meq K/100 g soil. The organic matter content of the soil was 1.48 %, soil pH was 7.0 and the texture of the soil was sandy loam. Seven water stress treatments such as 100% f.c. (field capacity) (To), 80% f.c. (T 1), 60% f.c. (T 2) 40% f.c. (T 3), 35% f.c. for 15 days during 15-30 days of growth (T 4),35% f.c. during 45-60 days of growth (T 5), and double stress i.e. the combination of T 4 and T 5 (T 6) were used in this study. Three plants were allowed to grow in each pot. In order to obtain plant samples for growth analysis additional set of pots with identical treatments were maintained. Leaf Area Index (LAI) was measured following the method developed by Hunt (1981), crop growth rate (CGR) and relative growth rates (RGR) were measured following the formulae developed by Radford (1967). The net assimilation rate (NAR) was measured by the formula developed by Gregory (1926). After fifteen days of germination, leaf area (LA) of the crop was measured. This measurement was continued at regular intervals of 15 days upto 75 days of growth. These records were used for different plant growth analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that all the characters showed positive and significant correlation with yield except LAI. Among these factors RGR showed strongest correlation with yield followed by CGR and FLA.
