Performance of Electric Current Treated Seeds of Bottle Gourd (lagenaria Slceraria (mol.) Standl.) on Growth, Sex Expression and Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three different doses of electric current were applied to the seeds of bottle gourd for one and five minutes duration to study their effects on growth, sex expression and yield. In one minute duration, maximum vegetative growth was observed at 300 mA. In five minutes duration, total length of plant, total number of nodes and leaves and dry weight of plant were maximum at. 150 mA but the length of main vine and number of branches were observed highest at 300 mA. The first female flower appeared at lowest number of nodes at 75 mA in both one and five minutes durations. The number of female flowers was found highest at 300 mA in one minute duration but in five minutes duration the highest number of female flowers was at 75 mA. The percentage of female flowers was maximum at 75 mA in both one and five minutes durations where male to female sex ratio was observed lowest. The yield increased at 150 mA of one minute duration due to increase in fresh weight per fruit.

Objectives:

To study the effect of electric current treatment of seeds for one and five minutes duration for the modification of growth, sex expression and yield of bottle gourd.

Methodology:

Air-dry seeds of bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) standl.) of 10% moisture content were used. Seeds were placed in a mixure of electrolyte solutions of 5 % KN0₃ and 0.5 % Ca(N0₃)₂ (1:1) in between two copper electrodes (7 cm x 7 cm x 0.5 cm) in a glass beaker. Then a smooth electric current of DC 220 V having three intensities (75, 150 and 300 mA) for one and five minutes duration was passed through seeds. No electric current was passed through control seeds. They were immersed in electrolyte for one and five minutes durations, respectively. Control and treated seeds were air-dried by placing them on cheese cloth for 24 hours. The treated seeds were sown in polythelene bags (30 x150 cm) filled with sandy loam soil and decomposed cowdung (3:1) on 21.2.1990. Seedlings of 42 days old were sown in the prepared field of 4 m x 4 m plot. The field experiment was set in trireplicated randomized complete block design (RCBD). Weeding, manuring, mulching, irrigation and other necessary cultural practices were done in the field as and when required. The length and number of nodes and leaves of main vine and branches and number of female and male flowers were recorded during final harvest. The plants were finally harvested after four months of sowing. After harvest, plants were chopped and dried in oven at 65°C till constant dry weight was obtained. The fruits were harvested from time to time at marketable stage and fresh weight of them was taken just immediately after harvest.
