An Evaluation of the Training Course on Communication Skills

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the training for the Female Block Supervisors (FBS) held at the Graduate Training Institute on "Communication Skills". The average age of the participants was 28 years ranging from 22-35 years. All the participants were two years diploma holders in agriculture. The basic qualification varied from S. S. C to graduation. The length of service of the participants varied from 1 year to 11 years i. e., many of them had well exposure to field problems. They had strong attitude for in service training. They mentioned some essential fields for further training. The training course was assessed by the participants as "very useful" to perform their duties more efficiently. The methodology used for conducting the training was evaluated as appropriate and congenial for acquiring knowledge and skill by involving them in the learning process through field situation. Pre-training evaluation score averaged 42 while post-training evaluation averaged 68.67 on subject matter knowledge. To compare the difference between pre-and post-training evaluation, t-test was done and the result indicated a highly significant difference. The over all management was satisfactory.

Objectives:

The main objectives of the training course was to provide necessary knowledge, skills and methods to the FBS about communication and through practical sessions make them so efficient that they will be able to communicate to the farm women in more efficient way.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Graduate Training Institute (GTI), Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 6 to 19,1991. The respondent were Female Block Supervisors (FBS) of the Directorate of Agricultural Extension (DAE) who came to participate in a training course on "Communication Skills", There were 22 FBS in the training course. The data were collected from all the participants during the training course through questionnaires. The subject matter knowledge of the trainees before and after the course were estimated by pre-and post-training evaluation. The structural questionnaires contained questions related to service career, name of organization, job responsibilities, trainings attended, utilization of those trainings received, field and administrative problems, attitude towards in service training, evaluation of topics included in the training programme, opinion regarding duration of the course and other relevant matters. The opinions of the trainees also recorded for future improvement of the similar course. There were also some suggestions regarding administration and management of the course. The variables were measured according to scores. Finally, the results were statistically analysed and conclusions were drawn on the basis of the results.

Training for shorter period is an attempt to provide the conditions in which the participants can learn more. It is the participant who can utilize the knowledge for efficient discharge his/her duties. Learning is the only process which helps one in developing a proper approach towards life and solving problems in more efficiently. It is hoped that, the trainees through the training, 'communication skill', gained confidence for a skillful communicator and this is the real outcome of this training programme.
