Fixation of Added Potassium in Some Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Potassium fixation in the surface horizons of twenty representative soil series of Bangladesh varied between 4.6 and 116.8 per cent of the 250 lbs/acre of added K. High amounts (more than 100 lbs/acre) of potassium were fixed by the younger alluvial and coastal floodplain soils of Kumira, Silmandi, Sara. Patenga, Gangachara and Pirgacha series. Santhia, Bajra. Olipur and Kalma soils, developed on older alluvium and piedmont deposits, fixed 50 to 100 lbs/acre. Older soils of Madhupur, Barind and Hill tracts (Hiakhu, Rangapani, Belabo, Amnura and Kashimpur) fixed less than 50 lbs/acre.

Objectives:

To study the potassium fixation capacity of some representative soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Soil samples were collected from twenty representative series of Bangladesh. Potassium fixation was studied following Volk's (1934) method as described by Jackson (1958), with the modification that potassium was added at the rate of 250 lbs of K per acre instead of 1000 lbs per acre as was suggested in the original method of Volk (1934). This was done to make the experimental conditions closer to practical agriculture (Wirklander, 1961).Ten ml of potassium chloride solution containing 125 ppm of K 10g of soil and was allowed to stand overnight. On the following day, the soil was dried at 70C on a steam hot plate and kept dry for 24 hours. The next day, the dried soil was wetted again with 10 ml distilled water. In this way, the soils were subjected to 5 cycles of alternate wetting and drying over a period of 10 days. The soils were then extracted with neutral normal NH4OAc.Ten ml of KCl solution of the same concentration was added to fresh log samples of the same soils and the soils were immediately extracted with neutral normal NH₄OAc. The differences between the amounts of potassium extracted from these samples and from the corresponding samples subjected to alternate wetting and drying were taken as the amounts of potassium fixed by the respective soils (Jackson, l958). All experiments were carried out in triplicates. Particle-size analysis was done by hydrometer method (Piper, 1966) and textural classes were determined from the textural triangle. pH was determined electro-chemically by using Pye glass electrode pH meter. The soil: water ratio was l:2.5. organic carbon was determined by walkley and Black’s wet oxidation method and the values were converted to organic matter by multiplying by 1.724 (Piper, 1966). CEC was determined using neutral normal NH₄OAc as described by Jackson (1958).
