Retention of Caicium, Magnesium, Copper, Zinc and Iron by Humic Acids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two types of grouping function in the retention of calcium and magnesium ions while four types of groupings function in the retention of Cu, Zn and Fe ions. The relative stability of the complexes formed by the combination of the metal ions to humic acid fraction followed following sequences : Mg < Ca< Zn< Cu< Fe. The humic acid fractions collected from the four sources gave elution curves of the same general nature but the retention capacity of the humic acid fraction collected from Maghbazar high land soil was lower compared to other three samples of humic acid. This was associated with less intense decomposition of the organic matter present in the soil.

Objectives:

A set of laboratory experiments were carried out to make a comparative study on the retention of certain metallic cations such as calcium, magnesium, copper , zinc and iron by humic acid from four different soils and their relative stability towards various extracting solutions.

Methodology:

A set of experiments were carried out in the Soil Science laboratory of Dacca University to study the reactions of calcium, magnesium, copper(ic), Zinc and Iron (ic) with humic acid fractions collected form four different sources ; (a) Maghbazar High land--a well drained soil, much above flood level (b) Maghbazar Low land-submerged through out the Year. (c) Mirzapur soil-submerged for six months. (d) A peat from Faridpur soil. Humic acid fractions were separated from all the four samples following the method described by Randhawa and Broadbent (1965). In order to measure the adsorption of different ions by humic acid fraction, the column chromatographic technique, as described by Randhawa and and Broadbent (1965), was employed.
