Comparative Abundance of Phytoplankton, Periphyton, Epipelic Algae and Some Related Physico-chemical Parameters in Two Shrimp Culture Ponds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Numerical abundance of phytoplankton, periphyton and epipelic algae has been studied in an extensively managed (Pond 1 ) and in a semi-intensively managed (Pond 2) shrimp culture brackishwater ponds at Koyra during two shrimp growing seasons. Throughout the period of observation, the cell densities of primary producers i.e. phytoplankton, periphyton and epipelic algae were 21.3, 9643.89- and 19.89-fold, respectively higher in Pond 2 than Pond 1. Navicula radiosa Klitz. was most abundant in Pond 2, Navicula sp., Cocconeis placentula Ehr. and Cymbella cistula Grun. were also higher in Pond 2 than in Pond 1. This study reveals that if the ponds are scientifically managed then higher production of shrimp is possible.

Objectives:

To have a comparative limnologlcal scenario between traditionally and semi-intensively managed shrimp culture ponds at Koyra, Khulna.

Methodology:

During the shrimp growing seasons (May to October, 1989 and January to September, 1990) the ponds were sampled fortnightly for phytoplankton periphyton and epipellic algae. Besides, some physico-chemical factors were also measured. All temperatures were measured with a mercury centigrade thermometer, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), CO₂, NH₃ and total alkalinity were measured. Salinity was measured by a hand refractometer and for conductivity a Beckman Instrument was used. Sodium and potassium were determined by Flame Photometer while magnesium and calcium were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Algal density in different community was measured by compound micrescopy and with a Sedgewick Rafter counting chamber.

Achievement/Findings:

Fertilization of Pond 2 increased the number of primany producer so much that the grazing by shrimps could not reduce their number as in Pond1. The positive effect of semi-intensive management is also evident for the results of stomach analysis of shrimps collected from Pond 1 and Pond 2. Production of shrimps per hectare in the semi-intensively managed pond was about 9-fold higher than the extensively managed one. So, a sound scientific management for optimum production of shrimp is highly essential to increase the production of shrimp in the country.
