Effects of Silicon on the Chemical Composition of Rice Plants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice plants were grown in nutrient culture solutions. Silicon was supplied to these plants at different rates. The plant samples of early vegetative, vegetative and flowering stages were analysed for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, silicon, protein and carbohydrate contents. The application of silicon generally decreased the nitrogen, protein and potassium content of rice plants. Its application also decreased the iron and manganese contents. The use of silicon resulted in an increase in phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, silicon and carbohydrate contents of rice plants.

Objectives:

This study has been specially devised to carry out the effects of silicon on the chemical composition of rice plants grown in nutrient culture solution.

Methodology:

A nutrient culture experiment was conducted in the green house of the Soil Science Department,University of Dhaka. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the effects of different ranges of silicon on the chemical com position of the rice plants at three different stages - early vegetative, vegetative and flowering stages of Development. The experiment was arranged in randomized-block design with three replications and a total of nine treatments of silicon were included in this study. Stock solutions used in this experiment were prepared by dissolving chemicals of extra pure in distilled water free from appreciable amount of silicon and preserved in polyethylene reagent bottles. At the containers and apparatus used in this experiment were washed carefully several times with distilled water first, then rinsed with dilute nitric acid distilled water free from silicon. Nutrient solutions were made out of stock solutions and transferred to the polyethylene container of 2-litre capacity where the rice plants were later grown. The solution was renewed once a week in early developing stages and every fifth day in the later stages of development. Seedlings were germinated with distilled water free of silicon in a polyethylene pot of 4000 ml capacity. Two week's old seedling of rice (Orzyza sativa) variety Boro were transplanted at the rate of 2 plants per pot. The rates of silicon applied were 0,5, 10, 20,40,80, 100, 120 and 240 ppm of silicon. Pots were selected at random from each treatment on April 4, when the plants were one month old, on May 4, when the plants were two month's old and on September 4, when the plants were six month's old. The number of plants harvested from each pot on different dates was two. Aerial vegetative part of the plant samples were oven dried, powdered and preserved for chemical analysis. Powdered plant samples were made ash by heating in an electric muffle furnace and the ash was extracted with 4% HCl. The extract was used for analysis of P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn. Nitrogen was determined by Kjeldahl method. Protein was calculated from total nitrogen by multiplication of factor 6.25. Phosphorus, iron and manganese were determined by colorimetric procedure. Potassium was calculated by using a Coleman model 21 flame photometer. Calcium and magnesium contents were determined by EDTA method. Silicon was determined by gravimetrically. Lastly carbohydrate content was estimated by iodiometric method.
