The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI Farm during Aus season, 2002 in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications to test a suitable method for algae control in the rice field by using copper sulphate and spacing.  Copper sulphate was used as i) spray at 25 DAT @ 100 g per 10 liter of water, ii) at 25 and 50 DAT @ 100 g per 100 liter of water and iii) control (No copper sulphate) and the spacing were- i) 25 cm×15 cm, ii) 20 cm×10 cm and iii) 35cm×20cm. The interaction effect between application of copper sulphate and spacing was not significant Spraying copper sulphate once at 25 DAT significantly increased panicle numbers m-2 followed by application by twice at 25 and 50 DAT. The lowest number of panicle m-2 (343) was produced when copper sulphate was not used. The highest number of filled grain panicle-1 (50) was found in control plot followed by application of copper sulphate twice (25 and 50 DAT) and once (25 DAT). The filled grain panicle-1 was the highest in control plot might be due to lower number of panicle m-2 that could be utilized more nutrients, space and sunlight.  Grain yield increased significantly when copper sulphate was used once followed by two applications and control but there was no significant difference between control and two application of copper sulphate. Tiller numbers m-2 and 1000-grain weight was not influenced due to copper sulphate.  One time application of copper sulphate increased grain yield compared to two times application indicated that completely eradication of algae is not better for rice yield. The closest spacing (20cm×10cm) produced significantly the highest number of tiller and paniclem-2 followed by the spacing of 25cm×15cm. The lowest number of tiller and paniclem-2 was observed in the widest spacing (35cm×20cm). The widest spacing (35cm×20cm) gave the highest number of filled grains panicle-1 followed by 25cm×15cm spacing. The closest spacing (20cm×10cm) produced the lowest number of filled grain panicle-1. The filled grain panicle-1 depends on the panicle number m-2. However, thousand-grain weight was not affected by the spacing. The spacing of 25cm×15cm gave the highest grain yield followed by 35cm×20cm and 20cm×10cm spacing but there was no significant difference between 35cm×20cm and 20cm×10cm spacing.

To test a suitable method for algae control in the rice field by using copper sulphate and spacing.

The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI Farm during Aus season, 2002 in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications to test a suitable method for algae control in the rice field by using copper sulphate and spacing.  Copper sulphate was used as i) spray at 25 DAT @ 100 g per 10 liter of water, ii) at 25 and 50 DAT @ 100 g per 100 liter of water and iii) control (No copper sulphate) and the spacing were- i) 25 cm ×15 cm, ii) 20 cm ×10 cm and iii) 35cm×20cm. The unit plot size was 4m×4m. BR26 variety was used as experimental purpose. BRRI recommended fertilizers such as Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and Zinc were applied at the rate of 127-52-60-0-0 kgha-1. Full dose of TSP, MoP and 1/3 rd urea were applied at final land preparation. The rest of three equal splits of urea were applied at 45 and 55 days after transplanting (DAT). All other cultural operations like weeding, insect-pest and disease management was done as and when necessary. Collected data were analyzed by following a standard statistical procedure and the mean differences were adjusted by LSD method.

Algae are commonly present in irrigation water and generally the rate they multiply is balanced by natural degeneration. However, when the balance is upset through increased sunshine or by the introduction of extra nutrients, the rate of growth increases and the algae blooms become a problem in rice crops. The effects of algae on rice crops mainly are inhibition of seedling germination and vigor; uprooted seedlings insecurely anchored due to respiratory and photosynthetic gases become trapped around seedlings, competition for nutrients with rice. In aus season, algae control in BR26 rice field by using copper sulphate @ 100 gm per 10 liters of water at 25 DAT showed that grain yield increased significantly over application of copper sulphate at 50 DAT. In addition to these, grain yield increased significantly with 25cm×15cm spacing than 20cm×10cm and 35cm×20cm spacing.
