Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This investigation was performed to evaluate the mycelial growth, days to primordial initiation, number of effective Smiting bodies, biological yield, biological efficiency and economic yield u I oyster mushroom grown on sawdust enriched with sugarcane molasses and what bran. The levels of sugarcane molasses were 0%, % (10 %, 12% and 15%, while the levels of wheat bran were 0%, 10%›, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, respectively. Any amount of molasses and wheat bran added to the sawdust improved the growth and yield of Pleurotus ostreatus. The highest economic yield was obtained from sawdust supplemented with 3% molasses and 3 % wheat bran combination though 6-12% molasses combined with 20% wheat bran and 3-9% molasses combined with 30% wheat bran did not differ significantly in respect of economic yield.

Objectives:

To find out the best supplements and their levels which might give better yield performance of oyster mushroom.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the National Mushroom Development and Extension Centre, Sobhanbag, Savar, Dhaka during the month of November 2006-April 2007. Sawdust was selected as the main substrate of the present study on the basis of their year round availability throughout Bangladesh. The two different agricultural byproducts, namely molasses and wheat bran, were tested as supplements at six different levels viz. 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, & 15%, respectively. Before pouring into the spawn packets, the main substrate and supplement were thoroughly mixed with Same amount of water. CaCO₃ was also mixed at the rate of 0.2% of the total mixture. Polypropylene bags of 7" x 10" size were filled with 500 g of mixture and their mouth were plugged by inserting water absorbing cotton and covered with brown paper and tied with a rubber band. Bags were autoclaved at 121⁰C and 15 psi tor I hour and then allowed to cool. Each spawn packet was inoculated with the mother culture at the rate of two teaspoonfuls per packet. Bags were then incubated for mycelium tor running in the mycelium culture room at 25⁰C temperature. After completion of mycelium running, packets were cut D shaped (2”× 1”) and transferred to culture room. The bags were watered three times a day. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. Data on mycelium growth rate, days to primordial initiation, stimulation to harvest, total harvest, yield of mushroom and some yield contributing characters were collected and analyzed following standard methods using MSTAT-C computer programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Mycelium growth rate (MGR) in spawn packets ranged from 0.392 to 0.6811 cm/day. The highest MGR was observed on sawdust without any supplement which was statistically similar at 10% level of wheat bran (W) with no molasses (M). The lowest MGR was recorded on the combination of M(12%) W(40%) which was statistically similar to M(3 - 15% ) W(20-40%), M(9-15%) W(10%) and M(15%), W(0%). The presence of right proportion of alpha-cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin was the probable cause of higher rate of mycelium growth in sawdust substrate. The levels of sugarcane molasses were 0%, % (10 %, 12% and 15%, while the levels of wheat bran were 0%, 10%›, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, respectively.
