Nutrient Dynamics in Submerged Soils. I. Chemical and Electro-chemical Changes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of the present experiments indicated that Eh values of the soils decreased, pH values gradually increased after an initial fall with the increase in incubation period. Ammonium-nitrogen content increased up to 30 days, phosphorus concentration reached a peak value within 30 to 45 days, potassium, calcium and magnesium concentrations gradually increased and sulfur concentration decreased with time of submergence in incubation experiment. Fertilizer treatment resulted in the higher concentrations of nutrients (except sulfur) at the initial stage of measurement and then gradually decreased with the increase in uptake in pot and field experiments. Sulfur concentration gradually declined with time.

Objectives:

To study the nutrient dynamics of soil solution and nutrition of rice and its subsequent effect on the growth and yield of rice.

Methodology:

Bulk soil samples were collected from farmer's field to a depth of 0-15 cm from the surface of six rice growing soil series of Bangladesh, namely Kalma (Albic Gleysols), Chhiata (Eutric Planosols), Bharella (Eutric Gleysols), Jalkundi (Albic Gleysols), Silmondi (Eutric Gleysols) and Sonatala (Eutric Gleysols). An incubation experiment was carried out in the laboratory with the soils to study the electro-chemical (Eh and pH) and chemical (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S) changes in soil solution due to submergence at intervals of 0, 1, 2,4,7,14, 30, 45 and 60 days of submergence.Pot experiment with six soil series and field experiment with one soil series include recommended dose, farmer's practice and control were performed with BR4 rice variety. Soil solutions in the pot experiment were collected through an outlet installed near the bottom of the earthen pot at intervals of 1,7,14,30,45 and 60 days from the day of submergence, while soil solution from the field experiment was collected at intervals of 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days from submergence. All these samples were analyzed for N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S. Particle-size analysis of the soils was carried out by combination of sieving and hydrometer method and textural classes were determined by Marshall's Triangular Coordinate. Soil organic carbon was determined by wet oxidation method cation exchange capacity by NH₄OAc method(8), Eh by ELE-3070 pH/Eh meter, pH of soil solution and soil (soil : water ratio of 1 : 2.5) by corning (Model-7) glass electrode pH meter. Soil solution was analyzed for ammonium-N by Kjeldahl method, P by ascorbic acid blue color method, K by Flame Analyzer (Gallenkamp), S by turbidimetry and Ca and Mg by AAS (Pye Unicam SP9, Philips).

Achievement/Findings:

The pH values of soil solution first decreased on submergence up to two days and beyond this period these values increased and finally attained at stable values in the range of 6.9 to 7.2 after 14 days in incubation study. The concentration of potassium increased gradually and the concentrations of calcium and magnesium increased rapidly with time of submergence in incubation study. The change in K concentration in pot experiment did not show any definite trend at the initial stage of submergence but with the increase in time K concentration gradually decreased due to removal of K by rice plants. Potassium concentration in soil solution varied with treatments depending on the properties of soils. In field experiment, potassium concentration was found higher with recommended dose in pot and field experiments (except control in field experiment) the concentration of calcium increased up to 15 days of submergence and then gradually decreased due to assimilation by rice plants , respectively). In most cases, the concentration of calcium was higher with recommended dose. The concentration of magnesium showed similar trend of changes like calcium .
