Nutrient Dynamics in Submerged Soils. Ii. Growth and Yield of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice grown under submerged condition showed significant positive correlation with different doses of fertilizers in pot and field experiments. This was evident from the results of both pot and field experiments conducted with HYV rice. Plant samples collected at 30 and 60 days after transplantation (DAT) and at the maturation stage were analyzed for total N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S. Dry weights of straw and grain were recorded and the values were correlated with nutrient uptake at all the stages of growth. Finally the potential average yields of rice and the yield obtained in the present experiment were compared. The percent increase in straw yield with recommended dose at maturation in respect to control and farmer's practice were 53 and, 11% respectively, whereas for grain the increases were 53 and l5%, respectively .

Objectives:

To know the physical, microbiological and chemical processes which profoundly affect the growth and nutrient absorption by the rice plant.

Methodology:

Pot experiment with six soil series was conducted in the net house of the Department of Soil Science, Dhaka University. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with three treatments (C = control; F = farmer's practice and R = recommended dose(2)) having three replications of each treatment. A high yielding variety (BR11) of rice was used as the test crop. Rice seedlings of 35 days old were transplanted in a pot containing three kg of air dried soil. One hill was sampled after 30 and another hill was sampled at 60 DAT. The remaining hill of rice plant was allowed to grow up to maturity. The rates of fertilizer applied are presented in Table 1. All the fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. A constant 5 cm standing water was maintained in each pot. Plant samples were collected at 30 and 60 DAT and at the harvest time. A field experiment was also conducted in Kalma series with BR4 rice as a test crop in a Randomized complete Block design with three treatments (control = N0 P0 K0; farmer's practice = N45 P15 K0 and recommended dose of BARC = N100 P2O5 K2O S20 Zn4 kg/ha) having three replications.

Achievement/Findings:

The percent increase in straw yield with recommended dose at maturation in respect to control and farmer's practice were 53 and, 11% respectively, whereas for grain the increases were 53 and l5%, respectively . The potential average yields of Boro rice is 5.90 ton ha^-l and the research average is 6.00 ton ha^-1. In this experiment 6.15 ton ha^-l of rice yield was obtained with the BARC recommended dose.The highest uptake of nutrients at maturation stage was noticed with recommended dose and this was followed by farmer’s practice treatment. The effect of fertilizer application varied with soil properties and also on the amount of added fertilizers. The trend of uptake was, however, related to the availability of nutrients at different growth stages.
