Potassium Fixation by Some Benchmark Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An incubation study was undertaken to study the extent of potassium fixation of added K in 20 soils of Bangladesh under different soil moisture conditions. The results indicated a wide variation in potassium fixation with different moisture conditions, days of incubation and soil properties. The highest K fixation (91%) was recorded in alluvial soils (Phagu series) under both field capacity and alternate wetting and drying conditions at 90 days of incubation. The values of K fixation was also higher (76%) in the same soil at 105 days of incubation under continuous waterlogging condition. The lowest K fixation of 16, 9 and 4% were observed under field capacity, alternate wetting and drying and continuous waterlogging conditions at 15 days of incubation in Goyainghat series. In general alluvial soils exhibited the higher values of K fixation. This was followed by the calcareous and red soils, The fixation rate was always high at field capacity followed by alternate wetting and drying and continuous waterlogging conditions.

Objectives:

To study the extent of potassium fixation of added K in 20 soils of Bangladesh under different soil moisture conditions.

Methodology:

An experiment for the determination of potassium fixation by the soils was carried out in the laboratory of BINA using 20 top soils (0-15 cm) having a wide range of characteristics from different locations of Bangladesh. The soil samples were properly processed and were analyzed for textural classes, organic carbon and cation exchange capacity following usual standard methods. soil pH was determined on freshly collected soil using soil and water ratio of 1: 2.5. Five grams of air-dried soil were placed into each small plastic cup and treated with 5 ml of 2 me% of K solution from KCl. A separate cup with soil but without potassium solution was also included as control. Soil moisture was maintained at three different conditions, namely field capacity, alternate wetting and drying and continuous water logging of 5 cm standing water. Each treatment was replicated four times. The cups were kept at room temperature (22-28⁰C) for four months and deionized water was used throughout the period to maintain the specified three soil moisture conditions. At each interval of 15 days, soil samples were extracted by lN NH₄OAc solution and K was determined by using Flame Photometer. The fixed potassium was calculated by using the formula K fixed = K added - [extractable K (treated) – extractable K (control)].
