Growing of Different Spices and Vegetable in Purbo Tethulia, a Haor Village of Netrakona District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of different winter vegetable and spice in the haor area of Purbo Tethulia village. The highest gross margin of Tk526000 ha^-1 obtained from the squash against the variable cost of Tk 17000 ha^-1 incurred. The crop also ranked the top most position in terms of benefit cost ratio of 4.09. Tomato emerged as the next most profitable crop in terms of gross margin but the next higher ranked crops were coriander, fennel, brinjal, cabbage, carrot, black cumin celery, fenugreek, cauliflower, and onion of benefit cost ratio. However, the important point for spices that they incurred much lower variable cost compared to the vegetable crops which gave higher yield. Considering benefit-cost ratio of squash emerged as the most profitable crop among all the vegetable and spice grown. Upon completion of the field trial a survey was conducted to find out farmers’ response about the cultivation of the vegetable and spices. All the farmers expressed their high satisfaction about the performance of the most of the vegetable and spices. They were especially impressed with the performance of some of the newly introduced crops such as squash and carrot. Even some farmers who were not involved in the study showed their immense interest to cultivate squash and carrot in their field next year.

Objectives:

To screen out the best performed vegetable and spice varieties for haor area

Methodology:

The study was carried out in Purbo Tethulia during October 2010 to March 2011. The study included six vegetables and six spices crops. The crops were grown in 4m×2.5m plots of five farmers’ field as superimposed trials. The yield plot-1 of the experimental crops were converted into t ha^-1.The cultivation procedure of each of the crops is given below.Tomato (cv. Hybrid-605); Squash (cv. Blossom House); Cabbage (cv. Atom Queen); Cauliflower (cv. Snow Star); Brinjal (cv. Shrabonti); Carrot (cv. New Koroda); Onion (cv. Taherpuri EW-20); Fenugreek (cv.BARI Methi 1); Black cumin (cv. BARI Kalojira1); Coriander (cv. BARI Dhania1); Fennel (cv. Local); Celery (cv. Local).
