Performance of Three Duck Breeds Khaki Campbell, Jinding and Deshi in the Haor Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To compare the productive performance of three genotypes (Khaki Campbell, Jinding and Deshi) of ducks at farmers level. To select a suitable genotype for the area. To develop an economic feeding and rearing system. Two experiments were carried out to address the above objectives. Twenty four farmers were selected from the village Purbo Tethulia, under the district Netrakona to conduct the experiment with duck. The farmers were selected on the basis of their previous experiences and interest on duck rearing. The selected farmers were almost similar in socio-economic status. Performance of three duck genotypes in 2010-2011 is discussed below. Average initial body weight of three genotypes of ducks belonging to both supplementary and non supplementary feeding group from 120 days to 270 days of age is given in Tables 2.1.3 and 2.1.4, respectively .It is evident from the tables that Khaki Campbell gained more body weight (950 g) than other two breeds by 150 days, when daily body weight gain of Khaki Campbell was 6.33 g followed by Jinding (6.20 g) and Deshi (5.27 g).

Objectives:

Methodology:

Two experiments were carried out to address the above objectives. Twenty four farmers were selected from the village Purbo Tethulia, under the district Netrakona to conduct the experiment with duck. The farmers were selected on the basis of their previous experiences and interest on duck rearing. The selected farmers were almost similar in socio-economic status. The farmers were divided into two groups of twelve in each for rearing two feed groups of ducks viz., supplemental and non supplemental. All the farmers were given a day long training on duck rearing system. Sexually mature ducks of three genotypes viz., Khaki Campbell, Jinding and Deshi were distributed to the farmers in order to study the egg production performance and egg quality characteristics. Feeding trial was conducted at farmer’s house with conventional management practices in semi-scavenging rearing systems. The experiment was conducted following completely randomized design having four farmer replications for each genotype of Khaki Campbell, Jinding and Deshi ducks. The experimental ducks were reared under the existing husbandry practices conventionally done in the village when ducks were allowed to scavenge from morning 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. In supplementary feed group, addition to scavenging feed, all the birds belonging to three different genotypes were supplied with a composite feed from 30-70 g on different ages of the ducks. Before handing over the ducks to the selected farmers, they were vaccinated against duck plague and fowl cholera and thereafter the birds were vaccinated to farmer’s house as per following schedule. Live weight of individual bird was recorded in the morning before feeding. Live weight of each bird was taken at fortnightly interval during four to six months and one month interval during six months and onwards. Final live weight was recorded at the end of the experiment and weight gain was calculated by deducting the initial weight from the final weight. The survivability per cent of the birds was separately calculated for each replication at the end of the experiment, dividing the number of birds alive by the number of birds reared and multiplying by 100.

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers of Purbo Tethulia have been rearing ducks for a long time as a part of their livestock production systems. Scavenging system of duck rearing was followed by almost all of the farmers in haor areas due to easy rearing system and availability of natural aquatic feeds for ducks. Supplementation of feed to scavenging ducks improved growth, egg productivity, gross margin and reduced mortality. Therefore, duck rearing with supplementary feed may be practiced as an income generating activity among rural haor people for their overall improvement of livelihood.
