Weed Control Practice for Irrigated Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Combinations of two weeding methods-manual and mechanical weeding, applied at two growth stages of irrigated rice were evaluated. Early weeding was done at 18-28 days after transplanting (DAT) and late weeding at 38-46 DAT during different seasons were done. Weed population, total weeding cost and rice grain yield were considered for comparison. Weeding cost was lowest (Tk. 520-1231/ha) with single manual weeding at early weeding in all seasons and was similar to that by single mechanical weeding at early weeding. Highest weeding cost (Tk.1780-3569/ha) was with two mechanical weeding. Based on least cost involvement and highest yield, only one mechanical weeding at 18-28 days after transplanting is better in irrigated rice cultivation in different seasons.

Objectives:

As an integrated approach, this study was conducted using two different weeding methods:

To find out the economic weeding practice(s) , either manual (i.e. weedling by hand ) or mechanical (weeding by BRRI weeder followed by hand cleaning) or their combinations at two stages of crop growth,
To find out the yield relationship with different combinations of weeding methods.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur farm, during 1989 Aus and 1990 Boro, Aus & T. Aman seasons. Rice varieties grown were BR12, BR18, BR21 & BR11 respectively. Different combinations of two weeding methods, manual weeding and mechanical weeding, with one control treatment (No weeding) were replicated three times in RCBD. Unit treatment plot size varied from 37.36 sq.m. to 117 sq.m. in different seasons. As per treatment, early weeding was done at 26, 28, 18, 26 days after transplanting (DAT) and late weeding was done at 46, 46, 38, 46 DAT during 1989 Aus and 1990 Boro, Aus and T. Aman seasons respectively. All other recommended cultural practices were done accordingly. Prior to each weeding operation, weed samples were collected from the treatment plots for computing weed population per sq.m. (green wt. basis). BRRI labourers were used for weeding operation. Per plot weeding time was recorded for computing cost of weeding operation per hectare. For cost computation, Tk. 35/- per man-day (Seven hours continuous work) was considered. Per season capital cost for BRRI Weeder was not included, as it was very negligible. Three samples of 5 sq. m. each were harvested from every treatment plots at maturity. Adjusting the grain moisture content at 14% per hectare yield was computed. Combined analysis was used for comparing treatments and seasonal variation and their interaction.

Achievement/Findings:

Weeding cost in the lowest with single manual or mechanical weding at 1^st weeding.
Total weeding cost is the highest with two mechanical weeding.
(Considering the lowest cost involvement and highest yield, only one mechanical weeding (i.e. weeding with BRRI weeder followed by hand cleaning) at 18-28 DAT is best in irrigated rice cultivation in different seasons under BRRI, Gazipur, field condition.
